The 2lb compromise!

Weigh in day again today….and following the 6lb first week effort I was entirely optimistic that everything was set for another great week…until the week’s plans began to unfold…

Friday night we had a party to go to but as I was driving, I spent the night on the Diet Coke, but the buffet tempted me. I had been full of good intentions by having a Weight Watchers meal just before leaving the house…but I just wasn’t full and it wasn’t long before I had tucked into a few samosas and bhajis. I knew I was on a slippery slope.

Saturday…the David Hayes vs Vladimir Klitschco fight…and a trip to my friend’s in Wales. The weather was good a n a full day on the beers was to be expected. Inspiration was needed…and the discovery of Premium French lager at the Co-operative was just the ticket…and 18 bottles for £9.50 = Perfection. We also picked up low ProPoint Burgers and Sausages…preparation was th key! What wasn’t the key was getting rather drunk and eating skin-on chicken, kebabs and anything else that was griddled out on the BBQ in the afternoon.

With regrets on Sunday, I set my sights low. I just wanted a loss this week. Everything before and after the weekend was pointed to perfection and I knew I needed to nail the rest of the week!

Class tonight and on the scales I picked up a 2lb loss. Fantastic for the week I have had…but in all honesty I have let myself down and next week I need to pick up the game somewhat and get back on track!

Starting Weight : 23st 13lb
Current Weight (Week 2) : 23st 5lb
Total Loss : 8lb

Slim time…

A lot of things define moments in life…and I have to say that the scariness of having a mini-stroke at 29 years old and having to go through the trauma of an MRI scan to see if I am well is definitely one of those moments where you have to take one big step back and think about what changes need to be made. The major one is an obvious one…being a fat bastard is NOT helping!

Almost two years ago I had weighed 23st 12lb when I decided that enough and had joined Slimming World. All had been going great…in fact more than great…I lost just over 4st and met the love of my life in class…but it has all been downhill since (in terms of weight…not relationship…). Comfort is a bastard. It’s easy to say “oh we’ll just have this” and before you know it, you are ballooning back to where you were and ending up in A&E at Leeds General Infirmary hooked up to a heart monitor and being told you have to neck an aspirin every day.

Something needed to change and as I was now living a bit further away from the Slimming World class than was easy, the closest option was Weight Watchers. I had heard mixed things but decided to give it a whirl.

Last Wednesday we went to the class for the very first time. The regular leader was not there but it didn’t matter as we signed up and I was told I was allowed 70 points…A DAY…which is what you get when you are 29 years old, 6’1 and a fat 23st 13lb…yes…that’s one pound heavier than two years previous….NOT GOOD!

After the class it was time to go shopping and get to grips with the new ProPoins system. So, armed with ProPoint Calculator and the shopping book, Morrisons was about to be hit hard…but getting used to a new system is a funny thing to grasp…especially when you are stood in front of the Jams and Marmalades contemplating grams, points, protein, fat, carbs and fibre. Some of the jams weren’t in the book, some were…but the good ones in the book weren’t on the shelves…nightmare…we must have literally stood in front of Strawberry jam for AT LEAST 20 minutes.

With closing time fast approaching and plenty of pondering to do over yoghurts, we were pointed in the direction of Morrison’s Eat Smart range that all had points on the back of them…bonus!

After stocking up on everything and ploughing nearly £100 in the supermarket for food that could feed eight families, including about 9 boxes of cereal, the plan was about to begin.

Home : surrounded by books, the planning began. On a day to day basis, planning the next day’s points is definitely the best way to go about things. We planned the cereal for the breakfast, sandwiches for lunch as well as snacks to accompany, and planned the evening meal and everything else around it. Everything began to fall together. My 70 points stretched a long way, and I was planning on eating a hell of a lot more each day than I would normally…but now at least I was eating properly.

Restricting yourself isn’t necessary of WW as you are still able to eat and drink whatever you want. Friday night we went to see Bon Jovi and I had two pints and 8 glasses of rose wine. Sunday we had a BBQ at my sisters but I was good and pointed absolutely everything up!

So what was the result? Well it was the first weigh-in following the first week on the plan and on the scales I had lost 6lb which I was over the moon with…Elle lost 8lb which was amazing. What a result to kickstart the plan!

So where to go from here? The plan is working a treat, week 2 is beginning and next week I hope to have a similar…or even better loss…

…CHUNK TO HUNK…ITS ON!!!

Scary times…

There are moments in life where you have scares. I ain’t talking about movie scares, or the time of heebie-jeebies you get when you are home alone, no, these are proper scares where there’s that instant when you think your number is well and truly up.

That happened to me last Wednesday on the way home from work. It had been any normal day, sat at work, doing nothing too strenuous as usual. It was on the way home that things started to get a little crazy. It began when my left leg felt a little heavy. All of a sudden I had no feeling in it. I was able to lift the leg and put it onto the clutch as needed, but it didn’t feel like my appendage. Then I noticed my left arm beginning to go. It was falling away to the left side. Next up, the left of my face felt like I had spent the day in the dentist…no feeling. I stared to worry and the first thing I thought was that I had suffered a stroke. A quick check in the mirror showed me that nothing had slipped out of place yet and through talking to myself, I was able to adhere to the F.A.S.T. adverts on the telly and make sure everything else was ok.

At this point I was still driving!

I made it to my girlfriend’s workplace and she said I looked as white as a ghost. I said I was ok to get home and made it back to Beeston in one piece…but I had now lost all feeling in my left side. We phoned NHS direct and they put me in touch with emergency dispatch…all this whilst Elle was running around at home cleaning up after Derek had eaten some chicken bones and had thrown up everywhere in the house…jus what we needed.

The ambulance came and I got hooked up to the monitors in the back. My blood pressure was high…but part of that was probably from the fact it was my first time in an ambulance.

After a good twenty minutes on the ambulance, they decided to take me to the LGI so off I went to sit in A & E. Eventually got seen and was told I could’ve had a possible mini-stroke. Great.

After getting all the usual warnings about health, and having blood taken (which took about ten minutes) I was set to sit back in the waiting room. It was half ten before I saw another doctor. In this time we had seen drunks, hit n run patients (who had passed out on Elle) and all manner of other people with football injuries to neck injuries! It wasn’t the most pleasant place to be.

After being seen by two of the fittest nurses I have ever seen, I was whisked away to a ward for observation until 1am when I was let go.

I now have an appointment on Thursday to see the Neurologist to see what’s wrong with me…fingers crossed it was a one-off occurrence and won’t happen again.

Scream 4

The are certain rules one must abide by in order to successfully write a good and interesting review of a “Scream” film :

1) It cannot be filled all the cliches that everyone uses when talking about Scream…so that’s none of the “redefined the genre” or “made horror cool”…leave all those up to The Sun’s review pages.

2) You cannot and must not ever reveal too much about who the killer is.

3) and last but by no means least, you cannot ever make lists like the ones made by Randy in order to list “the rules”…

And so, Scream 4 hit cinemas recently. It’s been 11 years since we were last in the cinematic presence of Ghost-face and it’s been quite a wait. The story seemed all wrapped up. We’d been from the boyfriend Billy and pal Stu on the rampage for revenge against Sidney for her mother and his father, through to Billy’s mum helped by Sidney’s schoolfriend on a revenge hunt for her killing killer Billy, and finally to Sidney’s long lost brother, the mastermind behind everything from day one…so where could the franchise possibly end up?

Well fast forward to today and Sidney returns to Woodsboro on the anniversary of the original film’s events and you just know things ain’t going to turn out too well. Deputy Dewey has now been promoted to Sheriff Dewey, in charge of the Woodsboro police department. He is now also married to Gail Weathers, in and odd twist of life/art being awkward following the fact that David Arquette and Courtney Cox were going through a real life divorce whilst filming this film.

Gail is the jealous type, and has a vendetta against cute blonde Officer Hicks who seems to be showing Dewey too much attention lately. But could that lead to murder?

After a couple of girls are brutally murdered (following a really clever and funny scene involving the latest “Stab” films) and the evidence turns up in Sidney’s rental car, our triple-movie heroine is told she is unable to leave Woodsboro whilst the investigation takes place…and the ride then begins.

Plenty of new characters are introduced, including the two movie geeks (well, there has to be someone to point out the rules), and the women they are lusting after, one of which is played by the stunningly beautiful Hayden Panettiere. Also thrown into the mix is Sidney’s cousin Jill Roberts and her mum, Sidney’s aunt who Sidney moves in with whilst under investigation.

The film is set up fantastically. It’s not overly scary, but there are a few jumps in there and plenty of the scenes where you can see things coming a mile off and see Ghost-face advancing from behind. It stays true to the previous films, and Wes Craven’s direction added to returning writer Kevin Williamson’s brilliant script adds up to something special again. Would you “get it” if you hadn’t seen the previous three? Probably not. Should you see if you have seen it’s predecessors? 100%

It’s fun, jumpy, spooky in parts and the final reveal and scenes are some of the best in the entire series.

Go see Ghost-face!

Movie News : Terminator 5

News broke recently that Arnold Schwarzenegger, fresh off the back of his Governor gig, is set to make his movie-comeback with a return to his most famous role as The Terminator in the fifth installment of the franchise.

The Terminator films are an institution and always arrive with a tonne of anticipation. When the new installment is released, it will be 30 years since we were first graced with the famous “I’ll be back!” line on the first leg of a journey with no beginning or end. The story loops from John Connor protecting his mum through him being protected himself by a terminator, through to judgement day, the war against the machines and eventually back to John Connor sending back Kyle Reese to protect his mum.

Ask many sic-fi fans and they will tell you that Terminator 2 was one of the greatest action films of all time.

T3 : Rise Of The Machines was a fairly decent movie in the sense that it was trying to shift a little bit more towards the comedy element that people love from T2 and away from the 18-certificate-box-office-takings-killer that it could have been.

Terminator Salvation was extremely good I thought. It was a really good way to begin exploring the post-apocalyptical world that John Connor knew and the history behind his meeting with Kyle Reese. I am very intrigued to see (because apparently they were going to make T5 AND T6) the movements in the war which lead to John Connor sending Kyle Reese back to protect his Mum as well as ultimately capturing and reprogramming the T-800 to fight on his side for sending back to protect himself (T2’s action)…and maybe even the eventual death of John Connor at the hands of an Arnie-like T-800 and the reprogramming of that exact model to go back to protect them all from the Rise Of The Machine’s aspect!

Thor

As the song goes…”If I had. Hammer, I’d hammer in the morning, i’d hammer in the evening, all over this land!”

Thor has a hammer and he knows how to use it!

The latest big-screen Marvel adaptation hit cinemas across the land this week and I had to see. Ever since spotting “Mjolnir” in the desert in Iron Man 2, Thor was definitely on my must-see list. Then came the memory of the rumour that WWE’s Triple H was originally slated to play the hero…things could have been sketchy…but up stepped Chris Hemsworth, a relatively unknown Australian actor, and all was good again.

Chuck in Kenneth Branagh in the directorial role and the always-perfect Anthony Hopkins as the pivotal Odin and everything was almost ready…then 3D pushed this movie into the stratosphere.

The 3D effects are the second best I have ever seen, beaten only by last year’s Resident Evil film, and the effects really do ramp Thor up to heady heights.

The downfall of the film however is a rather weak storyline. It’s the age-old story of two brothers, one father, a throne and a banishment. It’s been done tonnes of times and sometimes can feel a little “seen it all before” but at the same time it works really great.

Expect massive effects, rippling muscles and a few comic-book in-jokes and you won’t go far wrong.

Wrestlemania Week Begins

Well here it is. After months and months of getting super giddy about going to Atlanta, Georgia for my Third Wrestlemania, it all finally arrives in a blaze of glory.

Following a tear-filled goodbye at home with Elle, who I will think about every day whilst I am away, it was onto the train in Leeds to head to that there London. Ah the joy of a 2 & 1/2 train trip when sat behind a bunch of annoying Doncaster people who decided that they would loudly exclaim each and every station we passed through, as well as blabbing on about trip to “Skeggy” and Blackpool and telling all about hen they hilariously lost a trainer in the Blackpool hotel……….longest 150 minutes of my life!!!

London loomed tall and it was the tube from Kings Cross all the way to Heathrow T5 and then the Hoppa bus onto the Travelodge. Spent some time chilling before meeting up with Lawlor & Euan for tea in the hotel and a few beers before bed.

Bright and early up for a double breakfast (good ol’ buffets!) and it was soon time to get back on the Hoppa to Heathrow T5.

Euan had already checked us all into the flight so we literally just did a bag drop in the terminal and started the praying that the bags would actually make it to Atlanta with us.

Wasting a bit of time in the airport we grabbed some lunch at Wetherspoons before bumping into Claire Hiskett who is a ‘Mania friend of Lawlors, then we hit the plane after a looooooooong coach drive from the Terminal to the flight.

We were sat near the back but i dont mind where I’m sat as long as I am on there.

The flight was good…a bit bumpy in places but we got playing on Lawlor’s iPad 2 loads and I got to really liking it and am getting quite tempted to buying one…!

We landed and spent the next 2 hours clearing security, getting our bags, leaving our bags, clearing security, taking a train, picking up our bags, clearing security….

Got the taxi to the hotel and loved it when we got there. We paid over our money in cash and went to check out the room…cue three fully grown men trying to work one shower…..! I got it going in the end.

Went out to Hard Rock Cafe for a meal. Met “Icon”…a guy who had designed this massive poster with all he wrestlers past and present on it. We then went and sat down and realised that sat across from us was Sheamus, Daniel Bryan, Ted DiBiase, Drew McIntyre all having a meal and they were soon joined by Primo and Christian.

The meal was amazing. Lawlor had one hell of a steak! I had a massive burger.

Outside we saw Kofi Kingston, the Hart Foundation and even Dolph Ziggler and one of the Bella Twins…Dolph decided it would be a good ida to chase a pigeon down the street! The pigeon won!

Back to the hotel for the night and we hit the sack all set for the fun to begin tomorrow!

Fair Game

Cineworld Challenge Film #6 – Fair Game Cert 12a
@Cineworld Wakefield, 16/03/11 1:20pm
Trailers : Limitless, Suckerpunch, Source Code, Faster, The Eagle

I will be honest from the outset…the story of Valerie Plame and Joseph Wilson was not one I was particularly familiar with and it was a worry going into watching this film. Fair Game follows the real-life story of a CIA agent exposed by the government. We pick up the film just after the events of September 11th and the political movements that were going on following the attacks in New York.

Naomi Watts portrays Valerie Plame, the undercover agent who is gathering evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Her husband is played by Sean Penn. He is travelling around looking into the import and purchase of weapons grade Uranium. He subsequently writes an article which publically aims to show that President Bush was too hasty in declaring war as there was no real evidence of the weapons. This leads to someone within the US government exposing Wilson and Plame as CIA agents, effectively ending their careers and their lives.

The problem with the movie is that unless you have some prior knowledge into the situation and what happened, I feel you suffer in the politics of the whole affair. Penn and Watts are spot on in the main roles and bring a very believable performance to the screen, but you can’t help being confused by who is doing what and the political reasons behind everything.

I think if you have a general understanding of the situation, the movie would appeal a great deal therefore I have given this film two separate ratings below :

Rating if you know plenty about the situation : 8/10
Rating if you don’t know much to begin with : 5/10

Rango

Cineworld Challenge Film #5 – Rango Cert PG
@Cineworld Wakefield, 15/03/11 2:30pm
Trailers : Kung Fu Panda 2, Mars Needs Mums, Rio, Chalet Girl, Hop (teaser)

Animated films can be a little hit and miss. The Toy Story trilogy and Shrek have been massive successes and have brought adults as well as kids into the multiplexes to enjoy. But with the passing of Toy Story 3 closing out that set of films and Shrek seemingly having run its course, the way was paved for a new kind of Cinematic Animated hero…step up Rango.

The story is a simple one. Rango is a pet chameleon (voiced by the versatile Johnny Depp) who is accidentally thrust from a moving car and into the middle of the desert where he stumbles across the wild-west town of Dirt. A town with no law and order and in desperate need of help.

The delight of Rango is that it’s not really for kids. Adults will find a lot in there to keep them entertained, not least in the opening 2 minutes when Rango hits the front windscreen of a car, it’s clear that it’s the car of Johnny Depp’s character from the movie “Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas”, an ironic piece of foreshadowing.

As Rango is made Sheriff of the town through a series of unfortunate events, he embarks upon an adventure to help reclaim the town’s water supplies.

Rango is Industrial Light & Magic’s very first animated feature and the effects really hit spot on. The visuals are quite possibly the greatest visuals I have ever seen on the big screen and sometimes you can actually lose yourself in the scenery and  forget that it is animated. Some of the animals that Rango encounters are also amazingly cute and ugly depending on which one you are looking at.

The plot however fails to deliver. It’s a simple plot which just doesn’t inspire a second viewing unfortunately. The set pieces are amazing and the Valley Chase Scene is one of my all-time favourite moments but it just doesn’t help the story along enough.

All taken into consideration, Rango is worth a watch at the cinema just for the amazing visuals that will probably lose a lot of their jazz when on a smaller screen, but be prepared for a lumbering storyline which doesn’t help the movie on it’s way to becoming the new era in movie-making.

Overall rating :  6/10

Unknown

Cineworld Challenge Film #4 – Unknown Cert 12a
@Cineworld Wakefield, 12/03/11 5:50pm
Trailers : Source Code, Limitless, Fast Five, Suckerpunch

Unknown is the latest Liam Neeson offering in his new action phase he seems to be going through. On the back of Taken and big-budget A-Team, Neeson is firmly turning his hand to big set pieces and Unknown is no different. Here he plays Dr Martin Harris, on his way to a very important conference to give a speech on some kind of new genetic crop that will revolutionise the world. He is accompanied by his wife who checks into the hotel whilst Dr Harris goes back to the airport to pick up his left luggage. On the way however, he’s involved in a car crash and subsequently ends up in a coma.

As he awakens 4 days later and continues with his life he quickly finds out that his wife no longer remembers him and is “married” to another man who calls himself Dr Martin Harris.

What unfolds is a tense ride on a trust-no-one train which leads the protagonist down a winding path of despair and angst as he tried to unravel his memories and life in order to put together what is happening.

The movie is fun and jam-packed with tension and a kind spattering of action. I can’t say much about the story as saying anything would definitely give things away!

A fantastic performance from Neeson who carries the film mostly on his own with a little backup from Diane Kruger as the taxi driver caught up in everything with him.

If you liked Taken, you will love Unknown.
Overall rating 9/10
