I will be honest from the outset…the story of Valerie Plame and Joseph Wilson was not one I was particularly familiar with and it was a worry going into watching this film. Fair Game follows the real-life story of a CIA agent exposed by the government. We pick up the film just after the events of September 11th and the political movements that were going on following the attacks in New York.
Naomi Watts portrays Valerie Plame, the undercover agent who is gathering evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Her husband is played by Sean Penn. He is travelling around looking into the import and purchase of weapons grade Uranium. He subsequently writes an article which publically aims to show that President Bush was too hasty in declaring war as there was no real evidence of the weapons. This leads to someone within the US government exposing Wilson and Plame as CIA agents, effectively ending their careers and their lives.
The problem with the movie is that unless you have some prior knowledge into the situation and what happened, I feel you suffer in the politics of the whole affair. Penn and Watts are spot on in the main roles and bring a very believable performance to the screen, but you can’t help being confused by who is doing what and the political reasons behind everything.
I think if you have a general understanding of the situation, the movie would appeal a great deal therefore I have given this film two separate ratings below :
Rating if you know plenty about the situation : 8/10
Rating if you don’t know much to begin with : 5/10
