Page 145/365 : Glorious

Was a bit cold during the night. Elle suffered with it a bit but I never get as cold as her so only had two layers on and not five!

Got up this morning at 4:15am to the sound of the Cockerel singing its morning song loudly. Went back to sleep.

Eventually got up and the day was starting gloriously. By 9am it was already warming up…we were in for a warm one.

Elle did breakfast on the stove on the outside, which was lovely. Then we lounged about a bit and read. I got to the end of Dragon Keeper and downloaded Dragon Haven and got cracking with that.

Paid up our bill…£20 for the two nights, and ordered our tea…more of that later…

Had a drive down to the next village. There wasn’t much to see so we grabbed some snacks and headed back up to the camp. We dropped our stuff off and walked down to Ye Old Sun Inn for dinner. I started on the Yorkshire Lager…lovely. Had four pints of that. Elle was on half a shandy with lime.

We had lunch. Open steak sandwich, with mushroom & onions and some lovely chips serves in a plantpot…, see Facebook for the photos.

We even got some Geocaching in today. One on the camp where we placed the Archer travelbug that we had actually taken to Vegas with us, and then a very different one hidden inside a book, which was in amongst other books, in a red telephone box which had been converted into a Book Exchange…loved it.

Back to camp and chilled out…then tea came…we’d ordered Pie and Peas to be delivered straight to our tent. Amazing. The others on the camp were looking on jealously. What a treat!

I am writing this a little earlier tonight because shortly we’ll be going and sitting around the campfire with everyone else, tucking into a few beers before bed…happy days!

Page 144/365 : Carry On Camping

Work passed by today. There was only 4 of us is the contracts department all day.

After work, picked Elle up and we were off to Champs Field. It’s out first camping trip. We had a new tent, new stove, and more importantly, new Sporks!

We got to the site around ten to 6. We didn’t know which pitch we were meant to be on but it was fine. We sorted it and the erecting of the tent began. Now, I will admit, I ain’t the most practical of people. I actually border on “thick” when it comes to things like this. I wouldn’t have a clue how to put a shelf up, I have no idea how to change a flat tyre, and I definitely have no idea how to put up a tent…which is where Elle came good because she did.

20130524-220858.jpg

We got to work and it wasn’t too long before it was up and ready to be used.

20130524-220948.jpg

We had chilli for tea and watched the first episode of Game Of Thrones on the iPad before reading for a bit and hitting the sack. All in all, I think we did alright. Will the tent still be standing in the morning….? We’ll have to see…

Page 143/365 : The Breakdown

It was an ordinary day. Nothing out o the ordinary was taking place. Apart from the odd weather, the blue sky followed by the rain, followed by the blue sky etc, this Thursday was to be normally normal.

Work passed by without event.

And after work, all seemed to be progressing fine. I picked Elle up and we were away. We needed to nip to Poundland at the Crown Point to pick up a few things for our camping weekend…but that is where everything began to go wrong.

As I turned into Crown Point, with a push on the clutch and a drop from 3rd to 2nd gear, and an audible “Pop!” the clutch pedal dropped loose and I couldn’t change gear…oh dear!

As some of my most avid followers may recall, I have had problems in the past with this car, but only just after buying with an issue which got sorted out. This was it’s first mechanical issue.

I managed to keep control of the car and bring it to a standstill on a roundabout in the shopping park. It wasn’t ideal but the road was quite wide so I wasn’t causing carnage on the road.

I phoned the RAC. It was about 6pm. They told me help might not be there until 9-ish! Oh no!

Elle nipped out to Poundland and piled up supplies. I needed to be able to sustain myself in these trying times. When he came back I needed a piss so nipped into Frankie & Benny’s, where oddly I was able to walk straight in and into the toilet. If anyone had stopped me I might’ve peed myself.

Elle’s Mum relieved her from having to spend too long sat in the car with me. Haha, and she needed to get home to sort Derek out.

As I was waiting, I was Facebooking and Lawlor said it would have been the clutch pedal that came off the rod. I didn’t want to tinker as I had no idea if it was that and/or a clue how to fix it.

The RAC man finally turned up at about ten to 7, which wasn’t too bad. He took one look underneath and said it was the clutch pedal that came off the rod. Score 10 points to Lawlor. He popped it back on and stuck something on the end to stop it happening again.

And I was on my merry way.

Problem solved, crisis averted.

Wow.

Watched more Game Of Thrones tonight too. Good times.

Page 142/365 : Baby Come Back(wards), or maybe even Fuck Off Back!

Following yesterday’s XboxOne announcement it became clear that the new console had one flaw, the system is not going to be backwards compatible. This basically means any games people already have wont play on the new machine. But to be fair, a new system is a new system and we should be playing the new games one it.

Horrific scenes today in Woolwich in London as it seems an act of terrorism was carried out and a soldier was killed and reportedly beheaded. The person who was responsible also showed up on a video basically saying the country was screwed and it was deserved.

Well here’s my tuppence-worth. If you live in this country and you’re white, black, Christian, Muslim, Jew, yellow, red, legal or illegal, the bottom line is respect those who live here and this nation or fuck off somewhere else where you are welcome. I ain’t launching into a racist rant or anything here, because there’s a fair share of good and bad people in every race/religion/colour, but if you’re screwed in the head enough to kill, murder, rape and kidnap then you deserve to rot in hell.

We don’t need to see and hear this kind of shit every time we turn on the news. We don’t need racist beheadings, perverted rapists and murdering fuckwits around here. Like I said, respect this country and those who live here or fuck off somewhere else!

Oh and another thing…tonight Facebook and Twitter has gone into meltdown. Everyone calling for this and for that. There’s no simple answer, we ain’t going to deport anyone and you can’t instantly tarnish a whole belief/race with hate on any single action. So those calling for all Muslims to be send away, get a grip. Minorities in any race cause problems. Always had, always will….minorities. In the words of John Cena : “Rise Above”

In other news, watched another four episodes of Game Of Thrones.

Page 141/365 : XboxOne

It’s finally here.

20130521-220858.jpg

Tonight from 6pm, Xbox Live hosted a live broadcast of the launch of XboxOne, the latest incarnation of Microsoft’s gaming console and what have they done?

Well XboxOne will come packaged with the new Kinect which is a massive improvement. You’ll be able to use voice commands to turn the XboxOne on as well as automatically switching between games/TV/music/videos at the command of your own speech.

20130521-221047.jpg

There’s also a lot of upgrades linked to watching NFL and fantasy football in America as well as a certain move forward in graphics.

And thrown in there was a mention that it will have a Blu-Ray drive which, for me is a huge step forward and one Microsoft needed to make after shying away for so long after previously lobbying for HD-DVD!

Microsoft didn’t stick a price tag on the console which is scheduled for a pre-Christmas release, but that could be a wise move with the PS4 not announcing their price yet…Microsoft won’t want Sony massively undercutting them.

Games look amazing, and a more intuitive and clever bit of kit is the pull here.

…and I will be keeping my eyes peeled for the Beta testing project 😉

Watched episodes 3-5 of season 2 of Game Of Thrones tonight too.

Had a laugh at work today when Trevor mentioned the Watercress Eating World Record being broken and we ended up on what could be THE most boring website in the world… http://www.watercress.co.uk and reading about how Watercress can actively reduce wrinkles….and Trevor said only if you smeared it all over your face. The site goes on to explain how 9 out of 11 women actively said their wrinkles were better….Trevor said 11 out of 11 said they attracted more flies!!!

Looking forward to the weekend big time. Camping and BBQ Party. Might even fit some Geocaching in there somewhere…along with dreams of playing on an XboxOne!

Page 140/365 : Movie Songs

Quick day recap first. Work, home, Slimming World maintain, first two episodes season two Game Of Thrones, Doctor Who.

Now onto the main story I am starting today. The other day, I recorded Magic’s Top 100 songs from the movies…well, I recorded the last part of it and I have some thoughts about some of the songs and the way in which Magic presented them…

Here goes pop-pickers with the latest countdown :

52 – Love Actually – Jump – Girls Aloud – Fair enough. We’ll let them get away with this one, even though the version actually used in the film is the original versions and not the Nadine-Coyle-Pouting version we were treated to here. Still, it had clips from the film, therefore it’s allowed

51 – Saturday Night Fever – Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees – Worst…video…ever! And I wanna look into whether the song was actually recorded for the film, or whether the film came along and used the tune…and oddly enough, the sequel to Saturday Night Fever was called Stayin’ Alive…so technically shouldn’t it be from that…?

50 – Aladdin – A Whole New World – Regina Belle & Peabo Bryson – Now I have to admit…I know this song, almost word for word…but I would have never been able to tell you in a mission years who sung it..I thought it was Jordan & Peter Andre, what a lovely couple they are…

49 – Lion King – Circle Of Life – Elton John – Now we’re talking..but wait…still not a song actually in the film. The film version was the original one, with a woman singing it…I know it was Elton’s song…but does the original movie version get no credit?

48 – Bodyguard – I Have Nothing – Whitney Houston – And my first beef with Magic as they listed this song as being from The Lion King…tut tut. Credit where it’s due though, original song used for the film. As it should be.

47 – Flash Gordon – Flash – Queen – A song with more sound bites from the film than actual song…odd, very odd.

46 – Officer & A Gentleman – Up Where We Belong – Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes – Another “Was it written for the film or just used by the film” song. Very little footage exists of this being sung…it was probably never meant to be a real song

45 – Moulin Rouge – Come What May – Nicole & Euan – ARGH! Why, oh why, oh why do they insist on putting the shite dance-mixed version of this onto the music channels? Why? It’s shocking and the dance music overlayed on Nicole & Euan’s singing doesn’t even keep with the timing of the song. No…just no!

44 – The Three Muskateers – All For One – Bryan, Rod & Sting – Flashbacks! Bad memories. This was one of the songs that used to play at the Showcase Cinema whilst I worked there. Whoever heard Sting, Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart and said “Let’s stick all three gravel-voices together” needs shooting!

43 – Skyfall – Skyfall – Adele…or Boomerang – Listed as Boomeramng by Magic…odd. Quite a recent addition. Clearly someone at Magic HQ just over-typed what was here previously. And why was there never a proper video made for this? Poor effort!

42 – Boomerang – The End Of The Road – Boyz II Men – I know the song, but ain’t ever seen the film so cannot comment.

41 – License To Kill – License To Kill – Gladys Knight – There we go! A proper Bond tune, with a proper Bond video…more like it…more please…down with the Adele shite!

40 – Space Jam – I Believe I Can Fly – R Kelly – Brilliant…truly brilliant. That’s all that can be said about this. Quality film, moving song, perfection…they might as well stop the countdown here…

…and I did because I was watching this morning and went to work…more to come in the coming days as I run down Magic’s top 100 52 songs from the movies songs linked to films that the original might’ve been in.

Page 139/365 : Game Of Thrones

Well we finally got around to it. Game Of Thrones.

After watching half an episode yesterday we finally tackled it properly and seeing as though we were having a lazy day we went for it and watched the entire first season back to back and I love it.

It’s epic and grand and everything is just done right. I haven’t read the books yet so cannot comment from that point of view.

However, I have read a series of books by Robin Hobb called The Farseer Trilogy and Game Of Thrones reminded me a lot of those books. Some very similar characters in there and I still wish someone would acquire the rights to the Farseer Trilogy and give it the epic adaptation it deserves.

As for Game Of Thrones, this week, the evenings will mostly be spent trying to get up to date with America. Good times.

Page 138/365 : Eurovision & Camping!

It’s Eurovision Day!

But first…

Got up early-ish (about 1pm) and watched a bit of Game Of Thrones before heading out to Go Outdoors over in Pudsey. We’re going camping next Friday/Saturday so we need a tent, otherwise we’d probably be wet and cold…!

They had a good range there. One was even about £600 and was magnificent. Elle wanted to get one that was cheaper but it was just too low in the ceiling and my head would be touching it so we opted for the Rock 5 an paid with leftover Honeymoon money

Also found Elle’s bottle of coke today so we have the full set for our house :

20130519-130206.jpg

They will be going pride of place next to the bottles I got from Atlanta. Good times.

Amy & Tom picked us up to head over to Matt & Zara’s for our dinner party. We were having a full tapas style party food thing and all sat around the table to Paella, salamis, patatas brava (if that’s how ya spell it) and some nice breads. Originally I wanted a party for tonight, it is Eurovision after all but when we were invited around I made one stipulation…that we could watch Eurovision.

I was the only one watching it to start with but everyone started to move in and watch it too. It was good fun. We had a little sweepstake but I had shit countries again.

Bonnie Tyler actually did a good song but it was never gonna win and Denmark romped home with it. To be fair, their song had been favourite from day 1, and I had picked it as the winner well before I checked any odds. Quality tune…might have to download the album this year.

Should be in with a shout of the free £25 bet on Paddy Power with Paddy Power Pile Up. I guessed the first try scorer right in the Heineken Cup Final and said Denmark to win. We’ll see tomorrow.

Page 137/365 : The Full Monty

20130517-231552.jpg

“…and for one night only, they’re going the Full Monty!”

It shouldn’t be something enjoyed by blokes, but having just got back from seeing The Full Monty at Leeds Grand Theatre, and seeing Graham from Corrie’s sensitive parts, I have to say that I absolutely loved it.

And the best thing is, it’s not for one night only…it’s a live stage show that has had a limited run but is about to hit the West End running.

Based on the film, and adapted from the same screenplay by the same man, Simon Beaufoy, the show tells the story of out of work steel workers in Sheffield who, after struggling to make ends meet decide the best way to make a quick buck is to bare all in front of a load of paying punters.

Like the film, the show is splattered with comedy moments as well as a fair few tender touches in there, keeping the downbeat lifestyles intact.

The show has quite a few familiar faces in it too. Taking on the Robert Carlsyle role is Kenny Doughty from TV’s Stella, alongside The Bill’s Simon Rouse as Gerald. Corrie’s Graeme, Craig Gazey is also magnificent as Lomper.

The comedy is there…and the nudism is definitely there.

I would highly recommend going to see this…and you don’t have to be a woman…it’s hilarious

Eurovision Semi Final #2

1 – Latvia – Per with “Here we go” – they certainly got the crowd going with their jumping and energetic track. I actually really liked it and hope it goes through to the Final. If it does, I predict a top 5 finish.

2 – San Marino – Valentina Monetta “Crisalide” – she started laid on the floor holding a light and slowly rose. I can only guess it was an expressionist dance number of a flower or a butterfly emerging. Unfortunately I can’t see Valentina emerging in the final.

3 – Macedonia – Esma & Lozano – “Pred Da Se Razdeni” – it means “Before The Sunrise” and the lead singer looked way too much like a Macedonian Peter Andre. Will make the final on his looks. He ha a decent voice….then SHE came out dressed like god knows what and ruined the song completely. Hopefully this won’t go through!

4 – Azerbaijan – Farid Mammadov – “Hold Me” – Having won two years ago, I expected good things from Az, and they rolled out a singing Colin Farrell stood on a glass box with someone dancing underneath. To be fair, it was a nice song, very much along the Enrique Englesias line. The lead also did a VERY good mirror act with the dancer in the box. Will make the final and could do alright. The more I listened to it, the more I found myself actually thinking it was really good. Best staging so far.

5 – Finland – Krista Siegfrids – “Marry Me” – it was all VERY Las Vegas. Cheesy pop was the order of the day here with Krista wearing a wedding dress. It was very Katy Perry and I am partial to some cheesy pop. I want this in the final for sure.

6 – Malta – Gianluca – “Tomorrow” – Ukelele to start things off and a very cheesy-grinned Gianluca singing about a guy called Jeremy. It was a cute story-telling song with every word displayed in the screen behind. I really liked this and hope Europe put this into the final. Not sure how it would fare in the final though.

7 – Bulgaria – Elitsa Todorova & Stoyan Yankulov – “Samo Shampioni” – translates as “Only Champions”. Lots of drums kick started this one then the drummer girl started singing. It wasn’t quite Phil Collins. Poor effort from Uncle Bulgaria.

8 – Iceland – Eythor – “Eg a lif” – Looked like Tim Minchin crossed with Jesus. He crooned. That’s all there is to say.

9 – Greece – Koza Mostra – “Alcohol Is Free” – if only it was! And let’s face it….is ANYTHING free in Greece??? As is expected from the Greeks it was very Greek. Hope they don’t win…and so do they…they can’t afford it.

10 – Israel – Moran Mazor – “Rak Bishvilo” – very much rocking the “Sexy Secretary” look, it’ll go through to the final on that alone!

11 – Armenia – Dorians – “Lonely Planet” – it was a war song…dear lord. Way too much Denim on the stage. It’s like the early 90’s threw up on stage. Can’t see Armenia being in the final. It will be a “Lonely final” without them…

12 – Hungary – ByeAlex – “Kedvesem” – don’t know what he was singing about but he did it with a husky, smokey voice. Got the crowd clapping along.

13 – Norway – Margaret Berger – “I Feed You My Love” – Norway going mental and dancey this year. Margaret wore a very tight outfit and a ponytail. Could be a contender.

14 – Albania – Adrian Lulgjuraj – “Identitet ” – Lots of smoke an lots of fire. Lead singer looked like a very odd little man and he sounded like the lead singer of Lordi. Jury out whether it was alright or very shit!

15 – Georgia – Nodi Tatishvilli – “Waterfall” – with a title like that, I wanted water…Jedward did it last year! But we just got a couple singing. Boring. Will make the final.

16 – Switzerland – Takasa – “You And Me” – Oldest EVER contestant on the Double Bass. He looked like he didn’t have a clue why he was there!

17 – Romania – Cezar – “It’s My Life” – Wow. Erm. I don’t know what to say about this…main singer was erm…interesting.

And going through to Saturday’s final is – Hungary, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, Norway, Iceland, Armenia, Finland, Malta & Greece
