Wreck It Ralph – Film #1,194

Disney have done it again. Following the massive success of the Toy Story Trilogy, with its all-round appeal to kids and adults alike, along comes Wreck It Ralph, the story of Ralph (Voiced by John C. Reilly) an arcade game character from 30-years ago, living inside the Fix It Felix game as the bad guy who wrecks everything in sight before being beaten by Felix, controlled by whoever has stuck a Quarter into the machine…

…but Ralph has had enough!

Long days of wrecking things and never getting any recognition for it has taken it’s toll on Ralph and after a trip to Game Central Station, and a chance meeting with a character from the Hero’s Duty first person shooter gifts Ralph the opportunity to go into another game and earn his medal that will make him more accepted by everyone back in his own game. Here he meets Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch) and causes enough carnage to cause problems for everyone by infecting Sugar Rush, a sweet, candy-infused Karting Game.

In Sugar Rush, Ralph befriends Venellope Von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a lovable “Glitch” in the game who dreams of one thing…competing in the Kart race that happens each night to determine which characters make it onto the game the humans play int he arcade.

With Fix It Felix closed due to Ralph leaving, and the world of Candy Rush in peril, it’s up to Ralph to stop the evil King Candy turning Venellope’s life upside down.

Disney absolutely nail every aspect of this film. The 3D is fantastic and every character is perfect. Sarah Silverman’s Venellope is on par with Boo from Monster’s Inc in the cuteness stakes and its her comedy that brings a lot of humour to the film. Reilly’s Ralph is the lovable bad guy who’s really a good guy (who’s good at being bad) and you find yourself rooting for him the entire film.

There’s plenty of gaming references in there for everyone to appreciate with Cameos from some of the most iconic game characters ever, along with some very well placed product-placement.

One of the most fun, energetic, innovative and emotional films I have seen in recent times. This is one for EVERYONE. Kids will love the cuteness, adults will love all the retro gaming references too.

The film doesn’t officially come out until February, but we saw it on a free preview thanks to Show Film First.

Make sure you see this when it’s released

#1193 – Twilight Breaking Dawn Pt2

Not being a teenage girl with “boy troubles”, Twilight never really appealed to me in the early days. I watched the first one just because my little sister told me to, and it was one night when I literally had nothing to do…and in all honesty, I thought it was exactly what I expected it to be…teenage angst rubbish, with a moody cow in the lead, making underage girls the world over swoon over a poorly acting Robert Pattinson.

But as the series progressed, it took a turn I wasn’t expecting…suddenly I was actually looking forward to the next film coming out. The battle between good and evil, vampire and wolf, buff Jacob and pigeon-chested Edward became more thrilling and exciting. Where would Bella turn? Would she give up her mortal life? Would she EVER smile?

Then Breaking Dawn Part 1 came along and all of a sudden the films seemed a lot more grown up, after all, the teenage girls who fell in love with the series had now approached adulthood, so the story could change slightly. Gone were there slushy stuff…we were launched into full sex scenes! Business, as they say, was picking up.

We left the story hanging at the end of Part 1. Bella had given birth to a child she’d been carrying for all of two minutes, almost dying in the process. The only way for her to be saved was to be turned by Edward into a blood-sucker…so it was done…and then there was dear old Jacob, casting his protective fur over Renesmee by “Imprinting” on her, a sort of wolf bodyguard for life.

And so we arrive at Part 2 with the opening of Bella’s red eyes, seeking out blood to satisfy her cravings. The Cullens are now very protective over Renesmee, sure that the new-born Bella will want to kill her own New Born. But Bella soon has to realise that she can’t just be gobbling down the flesh of anything or anyone.

But the happy life is quickly thrown into disarray following a traitor in the Vampire world betraying the Cullens to the Voltari, the heads of the Vamp world who were still seething from their earlier missed attempts at ripping the Cullens apart. The Voltari will not allow an immortal child to be born, so off they trot from their homes to end everything once and for all.

The Cullens won’t go down without a fight though, so set about tracking down friends who can attest to the fact that Renesmee was born whilst Bella was still human. This ultimately brings in a whole bunch of characters who look like they were lifted straight out of the Puffin Book of Stereotypes! There’s the two Amazonian women, dressed like…well…Amazonians, there’s the Irish family with their flat caps and Ginger hair and there’s the English guy, unshaven, long haired etc etc…

When everything comes together, the epic battle as seen in the trailer is truly thrilling…but will everyone make it out alive?

I thoroughly enjoyed the entire film, although I was always seemingly waiting for the battle to take place and most of what went before could have been put aside. I still don’t think there was any real reason to split the final book down into two two-hour films, when one three hour one would have been sufficient, but it still kinda works.

There’s plenty of humour, particularly towards the beginning, and as everything builds towards that final confrontation, it doesn’t disappoint.

Twilight started off as a series I would call Twi-shite, but it has definitely now become Twi-terrific.

Santa’s coming…already?

Every year, Christmas begins earlier than the last. With Advent calendars now gracing the Supermarket shelves for weeks, and the slow inclusion of subliminal jingle bells on TV adverts, the festive season is fast becoming broader and longer.

Today I bought this :

and I want to know when you start to feel in the Christmas spirit. Is it as soon as October half term is out of the way, does Halloween have to move over, or can you only get into the mood when those cold December nights close in?

Let me know your thoughts.

Personally, Christmas can only start when this appears : Click here to view video

Sinister

Struggling writer, creepy house in the middle of nowhere, odd kids…deja vu?

Having finally got around to seeing Sinister, I approached it very much in the way I though the film would pan out from the trailer…B-movie type yarn with a few jumps and a little tension but a naff and predictable storyline…and in that sense I certainly wasn’t let down.

Ethan Hawke plays a struggling writer who moves to the house that was the scene of a grisly murder years before. He needs a new story and dragging his skint family into this new place seems like the best idea…until He finds a stash of old Super 8 video reels which show all the gruesome killings.

With all the elements set up nicely, the whole films clunks from one set piece to another darkened corridor, to another reel of film which begins playing on its own. Hawke does his best to move things along but those around him just seem like they don’t care. English Juliet Rylance really need to get back into acting school before she plays another part alongside a Hollywood a-lister because she stood out a mile as being out of her depth. Thankfully she had no real involvement in any scene which required any acting skills.

What develops is a by-the-numbers thriller which offers up very little that hasn’t been done before.

Most of the actual scares were in the trailer, so if you’ve seen that, an studied the movie poster, you can basically write the entire film yourself.

Overall it wasn’t the worst I have ever seen, but its certainly not one I will be rushing out for a repeat viewing of!

Resident Evil : Retribution

20121007-081756.jpg

Alice is back!

Retribution kicks in right where Afterlife finished, with Alice and her gang being attacked aboard the liner out at sea by Umbrella gunships. The opening sequence of Retribution is nothing short of stunning…especially in 3D…but then again, 3D is the ONLY way to watch the Resident Evil films now after director Paul W S Anderson took the stance to dedicate every single shot of the movie to be made in true 3D.

Following Alice’s capture and detention at an underwater Umbrella facility, we follow her kicking some serious Zombie butt whilst wearing tight leather again…what more could a guy want?

The story is silly and fun in equal measures. It’s a complete distraction from life for 90 minutes. Just leave your brains at the door (presumably s the zombies can have them) as you’ll not need the smartest head on you to watch this.

It’s big, it’s explosive, it’s mad…everything the fans have come to love about the Resident Evil films.

Taken 2

20121007-075604.jpg

*Spoiler Warning* – the following review may contain spoilers

After a thrilling ride in “Taken”, watching Liam Neeson punch, kick and torture everything he came across, I had high hopes for Taken 2. Ever since it was announced there would be a sequel, it had my interest piquéd somewhat. But the question that hung over the follow up was “who is gonna get kidnapped this time?”

Well the answer, somewhat disappointingly, is Neeson himself, and his on-screen wife Famke Janssen. And there-in lies the film’s first big mistake, as most of the action sequences are handed over to the daughter, played by Maggie “Shannon from Lost” Grace. This is where the film loses it’s pace. It’s Grace who is running and jumping across rooftops, it’s Grace who is chucking hand grenades around like water balloons and it’s Grace who is driving a high-speed chase around Istanbul…in fact, it’s not until Neeson manages to break free that he starts to kick some criminal arse himself…at which point, a good 80% of the film has already played out…and unfortunately when Neeson does get his punch-kick on, it is nowhere near as brutal as the first outing..,old age will do that to you kids!

“Taken” was a formula that worked. They took a revenges story and had Neeson literally punch his way to his daughter. However, Taken 2 just feels like its been made just because they could.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some genuinely decent moments in there, like Neeson’s expert grenade triangulation skills, but everything just feels like its coming up short on the original film.

Worth a watch, but don’t expect to be treated to the same as you were the first time around.

Killing Them Softly

Amidst the election of Barack Obama to the US Presidency, America was on the brink of financial ruin and the strain was felt from the top of the government all the way down to the little men, the gangsters and the criminal leaders.

Killing Me Softly follows the event surrounding a small area of America and the spiralling problems of small time gangland killings. Brad Pitt stars as a bounty hunter, drafted in to take care of a problem which arises following the robbery of a bunch of criminals by another gang.

The whole affair needs to be cleaned up and Pitt’s ruthless killer is the one tasked with sorting out the problems at hand.

Dialogue is the major driving force behind the film, using strong Tarantino-esque one-on-one chats to drive the film along at a fairly slow, but highly interesting pace. Throw in some very sublime slow-motion action and what comes out at the end is a slick but gritty film which deals with lowlifes in a unique way. Great cinematography and dialogue all combine into a thrilling piece of cinema.

If you’re looking for fast-paced action, this is not for you, but if you’re a fan of dialogue driven stories, then be sure to check this out.

Looper

Films which deal with time travel teeter on the precipice. On one side is simpleness tied in with silliness, and on the other side is the certain death if complete convoluted mess which tests even the bravest scientific mind. Finding a balance between the two is a tough one to manage but Looper steps up the mark.

Meet Joe, a Looper based in the year 2044, set up to execute criminals from the future who are sent back in time by gangland bosses to dispose of (its easier to lose a body in the past…trackers).

Joe is going about his normal daily job when he appears to himself…literally. Old Joe quickly makes an escape, causing the future to be skewed.

Looper then takes what you think you know about the film and twists it in a very evil way, exploring what might have and did happen after these events.

Old Joe is back in 2044 seeking revenge for the death of a loved one and so ensues a three way cat an mouse chase between Young Joe, Old Joe and Young Joe’s disgruntled employers!

Joseph Gorden Levitt underwent hours of makeup and study of Bruce Willis’ mannerisms each day to perfect his role as the younger version of himself. What he bring to the screen is a dynamic and fun performance and at times you actually do feel like you are watching a Young Bruce Willis at work.

What starts off fast-paced and action filled takes a slower pace in the mid portion of the film but this slower section sets up the explosive, if not slightly predictable ending.

Great use of special effects, some great performances including a great child-performance from young Pierce Gagnon and the film all comes together nicely. Was it as amazing as it could have been? Maybe not. Was it better than a lot of recent Sci-fi attempts? Definitely.

Well worth a watch.

Snow White And The Huntsman

20120610-220702.jpg

Kristen Stewart is back on the big screen and there’s not a vampire in sight. Here she steps into the fairy tale world of Snow White, taking up the titular role as the princess locked away from the world whilst her evil stepmother witch reigns over the land that rightfully belongs to Snow White following the death of her father at the hands of the evil wrongdoer.

Stewart is far removed from the world of Bella in the Twilight films and has to tear herself away from sorrowful teen angst we have become accustomed to and step up into a girl on the run, whilst looking to find her calling and stand up to the darkness engulfing the land. Stewart puts in a strong performance and genuinely looked at home in the role…even if her perfect teeth after being stuck in a tower for years were a massive glint of the glitzy life and just distanced her from then tale somewhat.

Then we have Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman, the role of a battler taken and thrust into the search for an escaped Snow White, who quickly changes allegiances shortly after seeing White. Fresh out of his stint as the Marvel-lous Thor, Hemsworth slips into a similar, although slightly grubbier role with ease. It’s a part which doesn’t require much in the way of acting ability so he’s perfect.

But the real star of the film, for me, is Charlize Theron as the evil witch queen. She’s devious and deceptively enigmatic and Theron’s portrayal of the pure evil coursing through her veins is evident from the very beginning. The pure pain of growing old and having to devour youthful girls in order to keep her looks is thrust upon you through Theron’s perfect acting and some excellent aging effects. She is physically brutal in her gyrating through her suffering and is easily the best part of the film…

…and then the Dwarves appear and I have to say, I expected more. Instead of utilising “Little people”, we have the likes of Nick Frost, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins and Ray Winstone portraying those little chaps. Gone are the Happy, Dozy, Sneezy names for names such as Coll, Quert & Gort. With an influx of strong British talent playing the parts, I was ready for some full-on dwarf fun, but it just never came. They end up being just extra characters and don’t offer as much light relief as they should have. I didn’t want all out slapstick, but some prat falls and more cutesy moments would have been much better placed than them just helping. And in some cases, it was actually difficult to make out what they were saying.

Put all the elements together, and you have a legitimate fantasy movie, loosely based on a classic but completely reinvented for the modern day. Kristen Stewart is on fine form but Charlize Theron is the gem of the movie.

I would definitely be willing to give this another watch in the future and would recommend anyone to go see it. It’s 2.5hrs of escapism. Step into a fantasy and live it through your cinema screen whilst you have the chance.
