Walmart Associates Week – Day 1

I’ve always been proud of every company I have worked for over the years. From the days of the family-run Baldwins, through Connaught and Phoenix I’ve always enjoyed my job….but in November/December 2013 I made a decision that I would never regret. I went for a job at ASDA in their Home Office. I’d been a long-time knocker of “big corporations” and used to rub my wife about her job at First Direct all the time…but here I was stepping into the Walmart family for the first time.

I instantly loved the job (well after a first day thinking I had made a massive mistake and was completely out of my depth) and fit into the role really well.

Then I found myself also taking an active role in the fun side of the Finance team, organising games and events and getting people involved. Following on from that I was elected into the Finance Colleague Voice team where I can be a “man of the people” in the department.

So the next step was to put my name down for “Associates Week” or “Shareholders” week out in the States. I heard a few things about it before I put myself forward but I wanted to experience it myself.

Luckily I was picked to come.

So here I am now, on a Sunday night (Central US Time [GMT -6]) after getting up at 3am UK time, picking up Phil, another colleague from ASDA, heading to Manchester, meeting up with my group, hopping on a plane from Manchester to Chicago, experiencing mental turbulence for half an hour halfway through, chowing down a Chicago style pizza and having my first Root Beer of the trip, flying from Chicago to Arkansas, using Wi-Fi in-flight, arriving at Pomfret Hall at the University Of Arkansas, swapping tonnes of badges with Brazilians, Chileans, Japanese, Argentinians, and dancing with them all to some funky music and now laying in bed after being the last man standing……Wow! It’s gonna be a cracking week!

Film Review : Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…and the (many) face(s) of Megan Fox

IMG_1503.JPG

This is Turtles as you’ve never seen them before…they’ve been “Bay’d”

Yup, Michael Bay has got his hands on those heroes in a half-shell (Turtle power!) and produced another action-packed adventure.

There is plenty of action for those who want to see masses of CG fighting and a slow slide down a mountain that literally lasts for twenty minutes!

Michael Bay also uses his trademark robot sound effects (Phut Phut, drumm, drumm) here too…wait…what? Robots in a Turtles film? Well, for some extremely inexplicable reason, Shredder’s armour has been upgraded and now we have the latest Transformer…Michael Bay really is a sell-out to his own product!

IMG_1504.JPG

So there’s the Turtles….they’re pretty much as you would expect. Wisecracking, loving pizza, being a bit clumsy etc.

…but then there’s April O’Neil (played by Megan Fox)….the reporter who finds the Turtles and helps them attempt to take down Shredder…

So here’s Megan Fox’s “I’m a roving reporter tryin to get the best story I can” face :

IMG_1496.PNG

…and here’s Megan Fox’s “I’ve just stumbled upon the biggest story of my life” face :

IMG_1500.JPG

…and here’s her “oh my god I’m getting shot at” face :

IMG_1499.JPG

…and her “oh look there’s 6ft ninja turtles stood in front of me” face :

IMG_1498.JPG

…as you can see..acting at it’s absolute finest there…in fact I reckon even I could have played April O’Neil :

IMG_1502.JPG

In fact, there’s actually more shots of her arse in the film that there are of her face…but that’s not just for all the perverts out there…it’s just that her arse can probably act better than her face can!

One quality mistake in the film too…she starts taking photos on her phone of a symbol she finds…yet you can clearly see her miserable pouty face on the screen instead of what she is meant to be taking a photo of! Selfie-fail!

All-in-all, it’s not a terrible movie…but I am please I only paid £2 to see it and didn’t pay full whack!

If you’ve got kids, they will love it. There’s enough to keep adults entertained too, but maybe only through a sense of nostalgia rather than actually being engrossed in the film

Let the nesting commence

It’s nearly baby time.

Yup, we’re now less than 6 weeks away from our due date of 7th November, when Baby Woollin will be welcomed into the world. So far, we know that the little one will be a little girl…something which was only confirmed to us at the scan we had today…it’s been a funny little story.

Back on Week 16, we went for a private gender scan. We paid £85-ish to be told we were having a girl…but that was only after about twenty minuted of searching around, then ten minutes of my wife having to go for a walk as well as drinking an ice-cold drink and eating some chocolate…then baby W decided it was OK for the sonographer to see what she was…and we were told we would be having a daughter.

Every NHS scan we’ve been to since have never been able to tell us though. Either she was turning away, or had her hands covering herself up. I guess, in a strange way, I want my daughter to be modest about flashing her bits at all and sundry…but there was always a little bit of doubt whether we needed to trade in all the pink for blue…but thankfully, today they said IT was definitely a SHE.

Oh, and she’s weighing in already at a nice plump 5lb 11oz! Yup indeed…she’s got her daddy’s figure 🙂

So back to the title of this blog….nesting…this weekend that certainly commenced. Now, anyone who knows me will know that my DIY skills are on par with Mr Bean’s, and I do about as much cleaning as Jim Royle…so I would invite you all to take a seat and wonder at a changed man.

This weekend I :

  • Cleared the rubbish from the car
  • Dusted and polished the interior of the car
  • Cleared out the boot of the car
  • Fixed a drawer in the kitchen that had fallen off
  • Refixed another kitchen panel under the sink which had fallen
  • Emptied out the cupboards
  • Cleaned all the cupboards
  • Bought new plates, cutlery etc
  • Cleaned out all the drawers
  • Threw away items we no longer needed/used in the cupboards
  • Washed the kitchen floor.
  • Washed all the tiling in the kitchen
  • Fitted a new Fridge/Freezer

Basically my “Man Status” just got a 10 point boost.

Current statistics : Man Status = 3.5

WWE – A New Era

The WWE has changed.

For better or for worse remains to be seen, but it cannot be denied that the direction in which the company is moving is a whole new one.

Lets take a look back at Wrestlemania. The biggest talking point of the entire show was when Brock Lesnar finally ended The Undertaker’s Wrestlemania Streak by pinning the Deadman in the middle of the ring completely clean. It was a shock. The whole wrestling world was rocked by the ending of a streak which has lasted 23 years and 21 wins (he didn’t take part in Wrestlemania 10 & 16). No-one thought it would actually drop at the hands of part-time-Superstar Lesnar…but alas, it did. The rumour going around is that Taker wanted to drop the streak to Brock years ago and now he’s got his wish. I was watching the whole event in a bar in Leeds and I have to say that I broke down and cried! I have always been an Undertaker fan and it felt like everything had been ripped out.

But fast-forward 24 hours and after taking a step back from it all, and watching Monday Night Raw, it was clear that the WWE has turned a corner.

NXT, the development side of WWE has moved into the foreground of the business in a big way. Daniel Bryan is the champion, Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper are part of the biggest and most exciting faction ever to have been seen in the company, Wade Barrett is loved by everyone, Bo Dallas and Adam Rose had big promos on Raw, Cesaro won the inaugural Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royale at Mania before pulling off Raw’s biggest shock by announcing he was a Paul Heyman guy, and to top it all off, Paige has come up from NXT to debut and win the Divas championship.

The future is clearly where the WWE are looking. Their developmental facility is absolutely amazing, and it was the vision of Triple H that made it all possible. He saw the opportunity to hone talent and progress them through into  the main company and that kind of foresight has now moved the WWE into a brand new and exciting world. It all feels fresh and fun. The likes of Randy Orton & Batista were reduced to a pointless tag-team match. I, for one, am excited.

Oh…and The Undertaker wasn’t on Raw…but we’ve all forgotten that now…haven’t we?

Giving up!

Right…the novelty has worn off. The plan was to do a daily blog…but this year has been especially tough. I’m finding very little to talk about on here so I’m stopping the daily updates on here. But I will still be blogging, so hey, wipe away those tears of distraught anguish…all is not lost!

I started the daily blog at the beginning of 2013. It was set to be a really big and fun year, which it was, and I stuck to it religiously in order to prove a point that I could do it. I managed it throughout 2013 and thoroughly enjoyed it, but now it’s just a chore and I am going to just post when I have something interesting to say….which may end up being quite often…we’ll see!

It was nice and fun whilst it lasted, but I am sure no-one will really care that I ain’t doing it every day…although the visitor stats do say differently!

If anyone wants to start a “get back to daily blogs” petition, then feel free to do so obviously…all pain and suffering of readers who stress about not knowing what will be going on in my daily life will be duly noted and I will acknowledge everything. (Unless you’re a porn bot, in which case I will just delete you!)

But for now, adios….(I’ll probably post tomorrow anyway…it just means I don’t need to commit to every day.)

Speaking of giving up…went to see Leeds lose to Charlton at Elland Road tonight. Shambolic. Yes, there’s a tonne of stuff happening off the pitch, but once the players go out there and that first whistle is blown, it’s up to them. Charlton were a poor team, but we made them look better than us. We get giddy if we put three passes together. We have nothing happening in the middle of the pitch. It’s embarrassing to watch sometimes. All we ask for, as fans, is a little commitment from the team, some pressure and opportunities but they just don’t come unfortunately.

There’s still a fear that administration could be looming, which would be an absolute disaster because I am not even sure we’d be able to fight our way to safety!

Anyway…the Dodgers are about to start playing…hopefully they can put in a better performance!

087/2014 : Goal Raider

Leeds game again today at Elland Road. We weren’t expecting much from the game…and we got even less.

2-0 down at half time without a clue. Austin and Murphy were abysmal and were subbed off at half time thankfully for Tonge & White. Tonge played really well in the second half.

We managed to get one goal back but the second one never came. Another disappointing performance!

Found Tomb Raider on Xbox Live on sale for £22. Bargain! Bought it! Started playing it and it was absolutely fantastic. Looking forward to getting more and more into it now.

086/2014 : No Pay, still play

Had the day off work today to use up my holidays before we get our full entitlement back in April.

Leeds United…the turmoil continues. Apparently the staff at Elland Road were paid today, but there’s not enough money left in the pot to pay the players. All the players were paid half of their wages (which some would argue was more than they would be worth anyway), with the other half expecting to come in at some point in the future…but who will pay it? What will happen if we cannot afford to pay the players? Is another Administration on the cards? What then? The rumour is the rules state that it’s a 17 point deduction…just what we need!!!

Fingers crossed. Pray for a win tomorrow. Pray someone comes in with some money to save us. Otherwise, never mind the pray…we’ll be prey!

085/2014 : Delete

Oops!

Had a really good day at work. Did tonnes of new coding and building a new spreadsheet template. Everything was almost finished. The system generated some popup emails. I went to close them all down. Accidentally closed down the document I had not saved that I had been working on all day!

Nightmare!

084/2014 : A day of wonders

Been an interesting day of footballing heartache, movie discoveries and computer fixings.

First of all, my “New” laptop went tits up last night. PANIC! Got the Blue Screen of Death. Absolute nightmare. Anyway, Googled the hell out of it first thing this morning and it looked like it was the graphics drivers…but I deleted and reinstalled that and it still failed…but I realised it was failing whenever I opened Vuze…so I deleted that completely. Worked an absolute treat.

Leeds United played away at Bournemouth tonight. 3-0 down after 30 minutes. Lost 4-1…what the hell is going on with our team.

I got royally annoyed on Facebook tonight with so called Leeds fans being more bothered in the Man Utd result too. Unfriended anyone who was banging on about them as if it was more important than what was happening at Elland Road.

DIscovered that one of my favourite cheese-fest films “Rock Of Ages” has an extended version! Few extra scenes, an extra song and a lot more raunchiness! Downloaded it and watched it. Loved it all over again! What a film!…and any extra scenes with Julianne Hough wearing a babydoll and underwear whilst gyrating is always going to win me over!

Image

Also found out tonight that the UK is simulcasting the Game Of Thrones premiere of Season 4 at the same time as America….which is good news…but the bad news is that it will be on at the same time as Wrestlemania 30! Oops! Gonna set it to record then watch it when we get back from Shooters
