Nine…Competition Time…

Travel tips are an essential way of life. Whether it’s someone suggesting a 4-way adaptors and just one American plug converter or planning how best to roll clothes into rolls to avoid creasing.

Essential tips are…well, essential to make travelling so much easier. I know there’s mental ones out there where people use their socks to wrap up tshirts and stuff like that.

But what are your travel tips? What one thing would you pass onto the world in order to make their journeys better and much more efficient?

Is there a way to stop the seat in front of you coming back and invading your space? Is there ways to ensure you never lose a bag at the airport?

Comment away…the best one might just win a little prize from my trip…

In other news today, a brand new Gameshow was advertising and I did well in the phone interview so fingers crossed for that. Might have to have a little trip to Bristol though a few days after returning from the states for the audition…but needs must, and I ain’t gonna miss out on a chance at big money if it’s available…watch this space!

Ten to go…

Ten days left until we fly over the pond.

Really must start thinking about all the little bits I need to take with me. All those miniature bottles of shampoo and all that. No-one likes a Smelly-Shareholder…and after a day on your feet walking miles and miles, there’s certainly a fair few sweaty ones about…me included.

Need to round up extra phone chargers and get them juiced to the max, make sure I have the appropriate cables for them too. Need to clear space on my phone for photos. Need to clear space on the GoPro for videos.

All essential stuff ready for the trip.

Shareholders 2016 – T-Minus 11 days…

…and counting!

Hardened followers of mine will know that last year I was lucky enough to head across to America with work, visiting Bentonville and Fayetteville for Shareholders Week 2015 which was the highlight of my career. I got to meet Walmart colleagues from all around the world, have fun, see some fantastic concerts and see how the Walmart world works.

Anyone who knows me will know I have not shut up about that trip since…

…and in just 11 days time I get to do it all again.

Having really got into the spirit of things last year, I was asked back this year to continue the enthusiasm and excitement and pass it onto other colleagues. It was an opportunity I have grasped with both hands.

The planning for this year is now in the very late stages. We had a first Team UK meeting a month or so ago, where we got to meet our teams for the first time. This time I’m in “Team 5″…we have named ourselves “High Five”…it took about three seconds to come up with the name 🙂

Here’s our team :

High Five

Without a doubt the best team.

In that meeting we started working on potential chants…but that will remain top secret for now…

We’re in a great team (the whole of Team UK) and I can’t wait to make the trip out to America again with everyone.

We’ve been given plenty of new kit for the week…but more will be revealed on what that looks like on all the days we’re out there. I’m not spoiling those treats for you…and two of the outfits certainly are treats!!!

To really help drive home the outfits I’ve invested in these lovely trainers for the trip :

Trainers

We have a pretty busy schedule whilst out there. We’ve got store visits, home office visits, museums, shopping malls, baseball games, karaoke nights, concerts and the all-important work meetings to attend.

It’s going to be one hell of a week…stay tuned to this blog and you can come along with me…

GIVE ME AN “A”
GIVE ME A “S”
GIVE ME A “D”
GIVE ME AN “A”

Team UK…READY!

Record Breaker?

Breaking an actual Guinness World Record has always been an ambition of mine.

Let’s face it, I was never going to attempt scaling Everest in the fastest time or running the 100m faster than Usain Bolt…but when I was a kid I used to receive the Guinness World Records book as a present every Christmas. I would spend hours and hours scouring the records.

I would read about Robert Wadlow, the tallest man that ever lived. I would cringe at seeing the pictures of the people with the world’s longest fingernails.

It all amazed me. But it wasn’t those awesome physical feats that intrigued me. It was the section usually called “Human Achievments” or something like that. These were the fun records. People who had records for stacking cards and kicking footballs through hoops etc…stuff I always saw as “I reckon I could have a crack at that”.

So that brings us to Last Week. We had a family holiday to the Lakeland Haven up in the Lakes. When looking through the entertainment packages that were on for the week I spotted something…Guinness World Records Live…what was this?

After attending the welcome meeting we found out that Haven have a deal with Guinness World Records this year to actually attempt records live! And the best thing was that it was open to people of all ages!!! This was my time!

On Wednesday we went to the “Qualifier”.  There was only three of us who turned up.

We were presented with three possible things we could attempt. During the qualifier, nothing was official but we could see who could get closest to come back in the evening and attempt it live.

The first record was “The Fastest Time To Pass Through Ten Inflatable Rings”…now let’s face it, I ain’t a small man…I was never going to be able to do that properly…so I was now limited (incidentally I did attempt passing through a ring…but I got stuck in it!)

The next record was the “Fastest Time To Separate Six Different Coloured Balls Into Buckets By Colour”. I knew I could have a crack at that one…we found out the record was just over 18 seconds. My first attempt came in at around 19 seconds…could it be possible?

I had a few more attempts and one of them I did in 14 and half seconds……..just a shame it wasn’t an official attempt. But I had qualified to do it Live that night.

The third record was “The Fastest Time To Throw 5 Inflatable Rings Over Another Person”. Whilst one of the other lads was practicing the ball bucket one, another young lad called Taylon and I said we’d have a crack at it. And we were good! The World Record was 8.09 seconds. In rehearsals we did it in about 6.5…we were going to do it Live on the night.

So the evening arrived and it was time to attempt the records. I went first with the Bucket of Balls attempt…it just didn’t quite go right though and I was half a second off getting an official World Record.

Gareth had a stab at the passing through rings attempt but didn’t quite get it unfortunately.

Then Taylon and I stepped up for a shot at the Throwing Rings record. As soon as the first one left my hands I knew we were doing well. As part of the challenge you had to stand 2m apart and the catching person was not allowed to use their hands to help the rings on…

So the record was 8.09 seconds…this happened :

5.90 seconds and officially verified as a NEW Guinness World Record!

Taylon and I had smashed it and the certificate is in the post.

I’d done it! I’d had an ambition to break a World Record and I had finally managed it…and it felt REALLY GOOD! I think all the Haven records will be getting collated at the end of the year for the Book…who knows, maybe some kid will be scanning the “Human Acheivements” section and see my record (if it stays intact), and think “I reckon I could have a crack at that!”

Batman Vs Superman (Spoiler Free)

Tonight I went to the midnight showing of Batman Vs Superman which was preceded by a showing of Man Of Steel. Both were on IMAX 3D. Beautiful!

I’m a huge Superman fan so was really looking forward to half of this movie. I am a Batman fan too…but not as much…and Ben Affleck as Batman…time would tell.

So the story picks up basically where Man Of Steel ended. Superman and Zod destroying everywhere during their huge battle. But this time we find out that the Wayne Enterprises building gets trashed killing tonnes of Bruce Wayne’s friends.

Cue the aggro towards Super!

Then what we have is two hours of story and action. Some of which is perfect, and some of which seems to continuously miss the mark.

For some odd reason, Bruce Wayne is plagued by bad dreams. Dreams with really stupid scenarios which had nothing to do with the plot at all.

Lex Luthor keeps popping up but eventually ends up as just a very small bit part with a few funny lines.

There’s plenty in there for everyone, but there’s a lot missing too and it feels like the plot skips from one bit to another in a really odd pace.

Oh and who knew that both Superman and Batman had mothers called Martha?? I won’t mention how that becomes an important point…!

Henry Cavill exceeds as Superman, Ben Affleck plays Bruce Wayne well but just lacks something when in the suit. There’s a desert scene and the fighting is just so-so.

There are plenty of cracking scenes though and some great humour (mainly from Lawrence Fishbourne)

 Make your own mind up

My First Tattoo – The Big Day

It was today. It had been booked in for a few weeks now. Designs had been tweaked etc. Plans were drawn up to start everything off with the Flux Capacitor section of the tattoo.

At 12 noon I went to my appointment at TattooOakmyst on Dewsbury Road. I met Jerry, a polish fella. He was quite shy but friendly. He led me into a back room and there it was…The Chair!

He explained what would be happening and how he had tweaked the design a little bit to make the Flux Capacitor the top part and the dates below that. this was the new design :

So he measured my arm and stencilled everything up and I was ready to go :

So this was the part I didn’t really know what to expect. I had heard horror stories. People fainting, bleeding everywhere, screaming in agony…Jerry did the first bit to make sure I was OK with it…and it was fine. Not an unpleasant feeling at all. I was going to be OK with this. It’s an odd sensation. It’s like being scratched by a needle over and over. But it’s definitely not horrendous.

So a couple of hours later…I have a Flux Capacitor on my arm…forever! I’m actually really looking forward to going back in a few weeks to get the next part done, as well as a few touch ups on the Capacitor, mainly lines and the  white spark in the middle of it. It’s difficult to get a photo that does it justice as it looks a lot better in the flesh (literally). But here’s the first step in the road to my arm being completed…

Until next time…

My First Tattoo – the night before

So here’s the deal…I’ve fancied a tattoo for a while now. I’ve always said I fancied something fun and things that I like. I’m not bothered about fancy squiggles or random flowers. If I am getting anything I am going down the route of my favourite movies or something like that.

I started playing about with designs a few weeks ago and got in touch with a local tattooist that I know has done some decent work on a friend of mine. He had some great stuff on his internet page too and it was typically in the style that I fancy…so why not.

I’ve always been a big Back To The Future fan…yes I even watched all three films back to back last October on Back To The Future day and I’ve always been intrigued by the time circuits.

So my design started off as wanting the dates. I have picked my late Grandad’s birthday as one of the dates, my birthday as another, and Althea’s birthday as the third date.

This is what it would look like.

Then I started getting a bit elaborate. What if it was a full half an arm etc….so I googled a few things and the tattoo artist at Oakmyst Tattoo on Dewsbury Road, Leeds and he whacked together what I wanted (these are different dates to the ones above and will be changed) :

So that’s what I’m getting!

First session tomorrow will be the Flux Capacitor part.

Am I nervous? A little. It’s my first ever time under the needle so I’m not really sure what to expect pain-wise.

Am I excited? You bet I am. I’m really looking forward to it and seeing the final product.

Will I regret it? No way. Three meaningful dates, a great design and hopefully an awesome tattoo.

Have I hid a mid-life crisis? Probably.

Will this be the start of getting loads? Possibly…

I’ll update tomorrow and give my opinion on the pain…!

Impractical Stalkers

Ladies and gentlemen…if you ever need a personal investigator to find someone…give this girl a call…my Sister Laura….

There ain’t no-body she can’t find.
So today we both had tickets to see The Tenderloins in Manchester. They are the four guys who star on Comedy Central’s “Impractical Jokers”. We were in for the 6pm show. Laura finished work at 11am so we headed straight over to Manchester. After realising the Box Office at the Academy (where we needed to trade our e-tickets for physical one) wasn’t open until 4pm we needed a way to kill time.

So Laura said “let’s go to the Lowry Hotel”. She’s stalked celebs there loads of times. So we headed there and after paying £12 for a bottle of beer and a Diet Coke we chanced not staying there and having to re-mortgage the house for another drink.

So we headed into the centre of Manchester…armed with the knowledge that they were coming up on the train…

…and this is where things went mental. So a random woman tweeted a photo of herself and her fella with three of the Tenderloins :

And we were tweeting her saying “where is this???” When Laura suddenly says “found it!”…she had Googled the red chandelier thing in the background and found  the hotel in Manchester that the photo was taken…absolute skills!

So we jumped in a taxi and headed over there…still dubious that it might actually be right.

We’d been in the hotel (which I won’t name out of respect to the guys) for two minutes and Q and Joe came out into the reception. We quickly asked Joe for a photo and he was lovely about it.

We missed Q as he was on the phone and left the hotel. A while later Sal came down into the foyer and we accosted him too :

We waited a while in the hotel and Q came back through so we grabbed him for a picture and I told Q that Laura had a crush on him…he said she obviously had good taste!

So that left us waiting for Murr…who just wasn’t coming down…Joe said he would give him a nudge for us…and it was getting close to the time we needed to leave to get to the venue. Luckily they were all getting a taxi and Murr finally came down and we met him too :

A full set of Jokers!

We headed to the show and managed to get sat 5 rows from the front. It was a brilliant show. So hilarious. They tell some fantastic stories and anecdotes as well as showing unseen footage from the show!

I would highly recommend the show to anyone!

Until Next time! Thank you Jokers!

2016.2.18 – Afflicted

So last night I wore my sleep monitor. Around 3am I half woke up and for some reason, thinking it was morning, managed to undo all the straps, remove the nose piece, take off the wristband and everything and go back to sleep. I woke up about ten minutes later properly and went and refitted it all. How odd!

Anyway, went to the Hospital and saw a specialist who analysed the monitor results. Normal people tend to stop breathing around 5 times an hour whilst sleeping…….I was doing it 52 times and hour! So it was bad but not severe.

Still, the affliction is Sleep Apnea and as such I will have to wear a mask to bed. Naturally I was told that losing weight is THE main issue with sleep apnea so I am even more determined than ever that I need to lose! I’ve even made my tuna pasta for tomorrow at work when I know they are all ordering Pizza into the office!!!

2016.2.17 – Testing & Venues

Had an appointment today at the Sleep clinic to take home a monitor to test for sleep apnea. Check out this contraption

Tubes in the nose, chest monitor strapped in, stomach monitor strapped in and a finger monitor. Beautiful. Gotta take it back tomorrow for the results. Hopefully it’s nothing too sinister.

After the visit to the hospital I nipped into Shooters Bar in Leeds to talk to the events manager there about hosting our 24hr FIFA marathon. He was really keen and said it could definitely be done. It just needed running past the management. Fingers crossed for a go on that real soon!

Right…sleep time!
