Page 187/365 : Flamingoes and Fancy Dress

It was the First Direct Family Fun day today. Got Megan ready and hopped into the car…only to hit traffic on the way and turn a 1hr 15m drive into a 2hr 30m one. There were some idiots out and about too. All very annoying.

Met Amy, Tom, and his kids at the main gates when they got there. Dumped our stuff at the First Direct tent and headed out. Megan and Ollie hit it off straight away and headed into Little Monsters. Amy rode with Ollie, Elle rode with Megan and I had to go on my own…this is how terrifying it was :

Megan and Ollie went on loads of rides together.

At one point, I even went on a roller coaster but wasn’t strapped in!!! Yup one of the kids rides and the bar wouldn’t come over my knees but the fella said I would be alright. I was actually scared!

Came home and got ready for a fancy dress party we were going to. Originally I was breaking out the Superman Onesie with my new cape but it was just too warm….so Dorothy made a re-appearance from the Stag Do.

Page 186/365 : Murray, More Minion & Megan

The girls at work had McDonalds again this morning. I bagged another Minion with purple hair. Awesome.

Today’s Minion picture had the Minions Skypeing Gru, who was telling them all about his new gun.

That background took some working on during lunch. Had to completely do it from scratch. Plenty of cutting and pasting involved on Paint!

Andy Murray won a cracking Semi-Final tonight too.

Picked up Megan after work ready for her to stay over before Flamingo Land tomorrow. Looking forward to the weekend. Theme Park and three movie cinema run.

Got another Minion picture for over the weekend…but you’ll have to wait and see….it’s good…….!

Quite a placid day really.

Work ticked along fine. 

Watched “Stoker” the movie tonight. Its was a strange one because Yvonne was telling me how good it was, and Paul Hammond at work was telling me how rubbish it was. Everyone in work getting McDonalds for breakfast in the morning…I am abstaining…really, really really must try to be good…it’s gonna be hard getting back onto it full time but I must do it!

Film Review – Stoker

A girl walks across a road. She’s wearing her Father’s Belt and her Mother’s blouse…she’s looking out into a field…and this pretty much sets the tone for the entire film.

Stoker is very much a slow burner, but an intriguing and engaging film all the same. We follow India Stoker, an introverted soul, mourning the loss of her father, living with her mother in a large house. It’s not until her Uncle turns up, to throw the family into a subtle disarray, that we start to see their family life unfolding.

Charles Stoker is besotted with India, taking a very keen interest in her in a way which constantly feels awkward and a little bit wrong, whilst forging a friendship with his Brother’s widow.

But it’s India’s character arc which is the main focus, and what a journey she goes on. I cannot say too much about her character without giving too much away about where the film goes, you’ll just have to watch it for yourself.

Director Chan-wook Park delivers a visual spectacle, with long sweeping camera shots, swift angle changes and a very typically clear colour palate to bring everything together. India is surrounded by blacks & whites and greys whilst her Mother is very much enveloped in a mustard and light orange glow, which fits in well with Nicole Kidman’s hair colour.

The script is also well written, and Prison Break’s Wentworth Miller clearly knows his craft well, bringing a very slick text to these characters.

Stoker is not a drift-in, drift-out movie, it’s a “watch and see what happens” type, driven by great cinematography and dialogue. Matthew Goode’s Charlie is sinister even when he’s being nice, and Mia Wasikowska’s downplayed part comes across well.

Chan-wook Park brought us one of the greatest Korean films ever in “Oldboy” and he definitely delivers in this, his first ever English Spoken film.

Andy Murray got through to the Wimbledon Semi-Finals with a cracking comeback today. I ain’t a massive fan of his, but coming back from 2 sets down is quite impressive.

Leeds signed Noel Hunt too today. That’s three signings in a week that saw Ken Bates move away from the Chairman role at the club…coincidence?

Worryingly there’s also talk of Sam Byram being “looked at”. If we want any chance of going up we have to keep hold of players as well as make signing. Time will tell with this one…

Caught up with Deadliest Catch, Big Brother and Corrie before watching tonight’s Apprentice…although I am writing this before it starts…hopefully the woman from Morley will stay in!

I only saw the first Despicable Me film for the first time a few weeks ago. But I love the Minions. I wanna go see the second one this Sunday…but in the meantime, the office has been going Minion Crazy.

McDonalds have been putting Minion toys into their Happy Meals, and we’ve been collecting them. I just want to go on record as saying that I have not had a single McDonalds myself during the collection of these…it’s the girls at work who have been demolishing them…but for just £1 each you can buy them.

Page 182/365 : Dexter Season 8

*Warning…contains MAJOR Spoilers*

Dexter is Back! Everyone’s favourite psycho-serial-killer with a heart returns to screens (where available) to wreck havoc once again.

Picking up 6 months after the events of the end of Season 7 which saw Debs kill LaGuerta who was hot on Dexter’s heels, we find Dexter attempting to get along with his life, whilst Debs is struggling, having killed an innocent woman who just happened to stumble upon Dexter’s little secret.

This time though, someone else is in the mix. Dr Evelyn Vogel has been brought into Miami Metro and may just know a little too much about little old Dexter. Will she uncover the truth? Will she end up on Dexter’s table? The next 11 weeks will tell!

Put 1lb on at fat class. Was to be expected.

Did a bit of a walk today too at lunch. Just eased in with a 25 minute 2km walk. Need to take my trainers to work though…my shoes were killing me!

Page 181/365 : Prediction League

Played a bit of catchup on TV a well as clearing some stuff off the planner. Finally got through Superman 2 and Superman 3.

Also managed to increase the interest in my Leeds United Prediction League up to 16 now. That’s a £160 prize pot. Still plenty of time before the season too. Think we might end up with around the 25 mark.

Top Gear was back on TV tonight and I loved it. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I ain’t a Car-Man. To me, a car serves a purpose and that is all. It gets you from A to B. I ain’t one to want anything flashy, I don’t really care about how quickly it can get to 60mph, and I certainly don’t give two honks of a horn about twin exhausts or stuck on pieces of plastic calling themselves spoilers and guards and other stupid things.

But I do love Top Gear. Yes, it’s a car programme, but it’s an entertainment show primarily and the show lends itself to plenty of laughs…usually at the expense of the hosts.

And that’s where the beauty lies. Clarkson is second to none when it comes to sarcasm and winding up, James May loves having the piss taken out of him, and Richard Hammond has seen my arse on Total Wipeout.

It’s on series link!

Watched Big Brother up to date too. Currently laid in bed watching the Dodgers game.

Also bought a cape…yes…a cape! Going to a fancy dress party on Saturday night and just getting costume together…!

Page 180/365 : Rubbish Car Boot

Went over to York Racecourse this morning for a look around the Car Boot but it was a bit naff. There wasn’t enough Tat and rubbish from people’s houses, it was more like a vintage collector’s fair than anything else.

Rubbish!

We came home and chilled out. I was knackered so had a late-morning nap…that’s what two morning getting up at Quarter To 6 will do to ya.

Watched Dennis, the movie, on TV before playing catchup with Misfits., getting through the rest of season 3 and into Season 4.

Set up the new season of the big Leeds United predictor league too, already got 9 people signed up to it but need more.

Page 179/365 : So Close…

And so the day arrived. Following the past mental week of not being in a competition, to getting through and being in a potential tiebreaker, to getting through again and actually winning the thing for a second time, it was time for the Fifty Grand Friday final.

Got up early and Elle and I headed into Real Radio. We got there just before 7. We spent the entire morning with Dixie & Gayle, the breakfast show DJs. The big plan was to have me on the show and have a good laugh whilst trying to thrash out some of the animosity towards us about how I had managed to get into the final.

It was such a great, fun morning and was also interesting to see how everything was put together on the show. We had some good banter, and I answered a few texted questions and we came up with the hashtag #GoYorkshireDave

…and then it got to ten o’clock.

It was time for the final.

We crossed over to another studio who was hosting the show. All five of us finalists were in our respective studios. There was a random number generate to determine who would go 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. I got picked out first…ouch!

My first question was “Los Angeles is in the USA” and I got it right, saying Fact. Everyone else got theirs right too.

My second question was “Peter Andre is from Ireland”. Fiction, which I got right. Everyone else got their right too.

My Third question was “Kylie Minogue is older than Danni Minogue”. I wasn’t sure, but said Fiction, and I was right. This was easily the hardest question so far.

And then came my fourth question…”Michael Jackson died in 2009″ and I literally had no idea. I had to guess. And I guessed Fiction…but it was a Fact…

And that was it, I was eliminated. Game over. It was really sad and I wanted to do so much better and get closer to the £50k but it just didn’t happen. It was completely the luck of the draw and I honestly think I had the hardest two questions of the first round, but at the end of the day, it could’ve happened in any order at all.

Congratulations go out though to Gillian from the North West who did win the £50k

I got a huge Real Radio goodie bag to bring home and the bottle of champagne that would’ve been cracked open if I had won…but never mind.

It was one hell of a cracking experience and everyone at Real Radio was so lovely and took care of us. It was great to spend the morning on the show. I just wish we could do it more often!
