Film Review : Mission Impossible Rogue Nation

Going to the cinema to see the 5th film in a series of which you have only seen the first two may seem a bit odd…but that’s exactly what happened tonight.

After winning tickets through Radio Yorkshire I went, along with my work colleague Mark, to see the brand new Mission Impossible film at the brand new IMAX at Vue Cinema on Kirkstall Road in Leeds. I’ve only been to an IMAX twice before and either sat too close to the screen, or too far to one side for it to be worth it.

But the Vue have got all the proportions and everything absolutely spot on.

We were treated first of all to three trailers of films which will be coming out in IMAX 3D…Everest, Wire and the new Star Wars film. They all looked phenomenal in 3D!

So onto the film. Now I loved the first MI film, but I had to turn the second one off and then never got into watching 3 & Ghost Protocol…but now I wanna go back and see them all the way through!

The good thing is that Rogue Nation stands alone. I never felt like I was missing anything from any previous film, so everything fit into place.

Once again we are thrust into the action right from the very first scene where Tom Cruise hangs off the side of a plane which is hurtling down a runway before lifting into the sky…Cruise really did those stunts you know!

It sets the pace for high action chase scenes, tense moments and plenty of giggles along the way, mainly brought to us by Simon Pegg.

It’s a thoroughly enjoyable actioner which really benefits from cinema viewing…so get down to your multiplex!

The film has everything you would expect from a MI film…gadgets, twists and a hot female lead 😜.

Well worth seeing

It’s a Mug’s game…!

So that bet didn’t come in. In fact the Cardinals got beat 4-0, which is just insane as they are easily the best team in the league at the moment. Typical that they choose to lose on the day I have money on them…but Toronto decided it was time for them to play bad too. Ah well…it was only free money!

Playing with “free” money!

After work today I had been invited to the Sky Bet offices to help them with a little bit of Market Research.

They wanted a customer’s opinion on some items related to multiple betting and I was happy to help. I was there about an hour and we had a good chat about everything…so now I have a £50 fee sat in my account just burning a hole and staring at me.

I have been on the app on my phone. I was talking in the research meeting that I bet on the baseball…it’s something I have started in the last few weeks after Steve (friend, fellow baseball addict and fellow games how contestant) had told me he did the same. The bets are, each day, 33p on each of these :

  • Accumulator of all the teams who have won the most games in each match. If they are tied I go with the team which has lost the least games.
  • Accumulator of all the teams whose starting pitcher has the best ERA of the two.
  • Accumulator of all the teams that are playing at home.

Because of the nature of Baseball, there can be anything from 6 games to 15 games a night.

Last night, my 33p bet on all the teams with the most wins came in and won me £50.14

Sky Bet were offering this Accumulator  tonight :

But, going on my own thoughts and those of my mate Steve, we said that the Boston game was one hell of a hard one to call…so it needed to be avoided. Incidentally the above pays £325 if it went in.

Instead I looked around, checked wins, and pitching ERAs etc and decided to lump it all on this bet :

Can I turn £50 of free money into £226.15 of free money? Let’s wait and see.

You Can’t Beat A Bit Of Bully

Tonight on Challenge TV aired a documentary all about Bullseye, the much-loved darts/general knowledge based show which brought the pub sport to a whole new audience.

Back in 2006, hot on the heels of being a contestant on Deal Or No Deal, I saw that Bullseye was coming back…and I applied with my Dad. We got on. Dave Spikey was hosting it and it was going to be on Challenge TV…and even better news was that it was going to be filmed in Leeds, so literally around the corner from us.

I remember getting to the studio and my Dad being really nervous. My Mum, sister Laura, my Grandad and Mally from Deal Or No Deal came to watch us filming.

When we were in the green room having a few throws of the darts, we found out that the two women we were playing against were our biggest rivals…their dart-thrower was a County Champion…!

So into the studio we went and my Dad had a practice throw on the famous Bullseye dartboard…he hit the edge of the board and the dart flew out and just missed Tony Green’s big toe by about an inch…I knew which way this was going…but all that was confirmed when I asked for Showbiz for the first category, which was the top left of the board…and my Dad hits Faces in the bottom left! Luckily I knew it was George Clooney so we were cooking…£30 banked!

The next round of darts we didn’t fare too well again…Dad just missed spelling and hit Britain and I couldn’t name some motorway in Scotland.

But in the third round, my Dad nailed Spelling for £30 and I successfully spelt Chihuahua for another £100.

In the second round, we didn’t add to that total at all because the County darts player was just too good.

So we came second…we had our money counted out for us by Dave and off we went with our Bendy Bully, tankard and darts.

The women who did win the show actually went on to score some decent prizes in the Prize Board then greedily gambled them all and lost…now I’m not saying I sniggered to myself………but I did!
So that’s why we were part of tonight’s documentary, talking about the history of Bullseye and reminiscing with the likes of Linda Lusardi and Gary Wilmot!

It was a true honour and privilege to have been part of such an iconic show and to have been part of a great documentary produced for you by some lovely people.

If you missed it, it’s going to be shown again tomorrow at 8pm on Sky One

The best things in life are free

Absolutely had and needed a chill day today after what happened yesterday. Feet up doing absolutely nothing all day.

A crazy thing happened this evening though. I saw something on Facebook about Uber taxis running a random promotion where they were basically delivering FREE Ice Cream to whoever requested it on their apps. So I downloaded the app and they brought Cornettos around. I didn’t have one as I really REALLY need to be healthy from now on!

Check out Althea’s face on the photo though when they delivered them. She loved it!

What a day

A day I could have done without.

Started getting chest pains at work today. I often get pains but linked to gastro problems with reflux etc. but this one felt stronger and worse than any other.

Ended up at St James’ in an ambulance. ECG machine hook up etc. had bloods taken around midday but needed more taking at 10:30pm to rule out any heart problems.

Thankfully all the ECGs and bloods came back completely normal so they are ruling out anything heart related, which is a huge relief…but what the hell is it? It’s scary when it happens and today was the scariest episode yet!

So I guess my Thank Yous today are numerous. Thanks to all the staff at St James’ who dealt with me today. Everyone was lovely and professional and an absolute credit to the NHS. Thank you to Elle who rushed down to hospital to be with me. Also to my Mum and Dad who came down too to check I was OK. And to Elle’s mum Janet who looked after Althea whilst we were down at the hospital, Dave for picking up my car from work And to all my friends who sent well wishes on Facebook.

Love you all

Keeping it up

Continuing on with the whole “thank someone every day” today goes out to Andy Adgie who helped me with a technical issue to source a product at a discounted price and for that, Andy….

Don’t worry, I ain’t gonna put each and every single thank you in here…but I am tempted to bring back the daily blog…………. 😀

Thank You!

We had a special event at work today which all centered around working in a great environment and doing things each and every day that makes you proud to work for ASDA etc.

At one point we had to write down one pledge in life. One thing to bring to our work and our life which would make both things better. We wrote them on a tag on a wooden stake and they will be displayed in the office.

I wrote “I pledge to say thank you to at least one person a day whether it be through good work or something in general life”

I feel like people just don’t take the time out to thank people enough nowadays. We’re all so eager to jump on social media and slag this person off and berate someone else, but we don’t always see the nice things in life. The things that make you smile.

So tonight I did my first thank you. I’m a big Leeds United fan (not a football fan in general…just a Leeds fan…I’ll discuss that another day) and I used to spend a lot of time on a certain set of forums where people would ultimately discuss Leeds United but would also just chat about every day stuff too.

Now I got a bit of a reputation on there for being a wind up merchant. I would constantly post things that would garner abuse and 99.9% of the time it was like water off a duck’s back. But as reminded tonight on Facebook…some people always stood up for me against the keyboard warriors. One of those was Steve Cooke and tonight I thanked him for that…and I meant it. Genuinely and heartfelt. He’s the genuine article and a pleasure to know.

So long may the Thank Yous continue and I hope you’ll all take this on board too and just stop to think about who has done something for you recently and who can you say thank you to. You don’t have to buy them presents or flowers or beers or anything like that…a simple “Thank You” goes a long long way!

Walmart Associates Week – Day 3

Long old day today. It all started with a 5:45 start. We went down to have breakfast in the Tennis Centre doing plenty of chanting and singing on the way.

Then we hopped onto coaches for the start of the day’s activities.

We started off by visiting the Walmart museum in Bentonville. It was really interesting to read all about the history of the business, comparing prices of items from then and now and really getting to know all about where Walmart came from.

We then made our way to the Walmart head office. At first, I was a little underwhelmed. From the outside it looks very standard but inside it was a whole world of difference. Such a lovely setup and some really friendly colleagues working there.

We bumped into the South Africans whilst going around so ended up having a few head-to-head chant offs.

We then headed to Fast Lanes. An entertainment complex where we had complimentary passes to play all the games but a group of us went on the Crazy Golf instead. I won a closely fought contest by two strokes.

We then visited a Walmart store again but this time had a guided tour, taking in all the back room workings. We have a lot of store colleagues in our teams so it was great for them to get their perspective on how things operate over here. There were some positives to bring out of the whole activity and I think it will certainly help going forwards.

This evening back at the dorms we had a dress rehearsal for our team chant. It went really well.

Our group had to lead everyone down to dinner which was fantastic. We really got the chants going and as the Americans have turned up, they were loving it.

Then it was time to head to the arena. There was some good banter with other countries. I even got plenty of Tweets up on the big screen too.

Then “Lifehouse” came out to perform and put on a decent show. But after all it was Train I was waiting for. I danced the entire way through Train’s performance even when others weren’t. I wasn’t going to ler anyone stop me. I loved every second of it

Early start tomorrow….5am meet….! Yeah…..

Walmart Associates Week – Day 2

Monday morning and a mixed bag today.

Up and down from breakfast around 8:30 before hopping on a coach to the shopping mall. Had a bit of a search around and picked up lots of Disney stuff for Althea.

We then visited a Walmart (which was absolutely HUGE) and a Sams Club (think Costco) to experience how the company operates over here.

This evening it was then a visit to the beautiful Crystal Lakes Art Gallery where we saw a Picasso and a Van Gogh as well as a Dali which looked like he’d been Photobombed! The night was all about celebrating ASDA’s 50th anniversary in style. We even had a video message from Simon Cowell and Professor Stephen Hawkins wishing us happy birthday! We had a DJ and Karaoke and…well…you know me…I just had to perform a bit of Chico Time in front of all the ASDA Execs….!

Everyone had an awesome time. Each group got up and put in a big performance after our group started it all with Everybody Get Up by 5ive!

Just found out it’s a 5:45 start tomorrow so up at 5am! Eek!
