2016.1.24 – Fortnight Film #2

So the first Fortnight Film is done and dusted. We had a fair few people watch True Romance and drop us a review and film voted for during the second vote is The Experiment.

Decided to not mess around and went straight into watching this tonight. Here’s my review :

Name : Dave Woollin

What type of viewing was this for you? : Watched once or twice before

When the film was chosen what was your feeling? : Seen it before – glad it got picked

Did you watch the film specifically for this review? : Yes I watched it for Fortnight Film

How would you rate the Fortnight Film? : 4 stars – Great

“Firstly I would like to thank Sian Davidson for selecting this film and also to everyone who voted for it to be picked. It’s been a few years since I saw this but I love it.

The film tells the story of 26 strangers who volunteer to take part in an experiment over the course of 2 weeks which will pay them $1,000 a day.

They take up the roles of Prisoners and Guards. The guards are given specific rules that the prisoners must abide by and are told that they must issue necessary punishments for anything done wrong.

What starts off pretty civil, with both sides not really taking things seriously begins to descent into utter chaos as the guards begin to use their new-found power to their advantage, bringing out the worst qualities in themselves whilst also attempting to hold back an uprising from the “”prisoners””.

What I love about the film is the slow burn of the carnage that is about to unfold as we see the internal struggle of people battling against authority, as well as the flip side of seeing those in power exercising their right to use it to their advantage and prey on the vulnerable.

Do any of the guards want things to turn around as badly as they do? Probably not, but driven by greed and power, things go the wrong way pretty quickly.

Forest Whitaker puts in a great performance as Barris, the ultimate head of the guards who begins to lead the charge of disciple.

One thing I do feel like the film lacks however is the personalisation of many of the characters. We see Adrian Brody’s character and what drives him to want the $14,000 that is up for grabs, but we never really know whether the “”guards”” are in it for the cash or are more interested in just flipping out. It would have been good to see some motivation for their antics.

Great film though. 2nd time I have watched and thoroughly enjoyed…and it won’t be the last time ever I watch this.”

2016.1.23 – So close pt2

Leed game today. Taking on the mighty Bristol City.

Had a fiver in my wallet pre game so whacked it on Doukara to score first and Leeds to win 2-0.

Had to wait until the 59th minute but up popped Doukara with the goal…but could we bang another away and bag me £200?

Nope!

Still, a 1-0 win is a win!

2016.1.22 – So close

In work on a Friday we have a Friday huddle. Everyone gets together and celebrates successes etc. As a part of that huddle we play a game this will usually be Bingo or a game of Deal Or No Deal.

Now with both, people chuck a quid into the pot. We take out 10% for charity and 10% for the office fund, then the rest goes to prize money.

This week we played Deal Or No Deal for a jackpot of £90. Once of the girls in the office gets picked to play and starts chipping away at eliminating amounts of money.

Last two boxes leave the 1p and the 25% box (£22.50).

Now, we’ve played this game on 19 occasions and no-one has yet picked the 1p box as their own…and neither did this one – dammit!

I want someone to win the 1p, not for the sake of the actual player losing, but just because it would be funny to get a complete pot rollover. You see with someone taking £22.50 out, that means that next time the jackpot is gonna be about £90 again. But if the 1p had gone we would have been talking about a possible £130 pot next time!

2016.1.21 – The length and breadth of it…

Been a strange one in the news today. It’s literally been one extreme to the other. First up that whole dealings from a few years ago with the Russian guy who was working for British Intelligence and ended up being poisoned by a radioactive drink…turns out the Russians killed him…but naturally by us saying that, the Russians have got pissed off and retaliated saying its a political move by the UK…so from almost breaking into a world war to…

…Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby turning up to present This Morning wearing the same clothes as they did the night before at the NTA’s after spending a night at Dec’s (of Ant and Dec) house getting slaughtered playing Pie Face.

Just wow!

2016.1.20 – Ant & Dec win…again!

It was the National Television Awards tonight.

Ant and Dec won the best TV presenter award. Can’t really argue with that or any of the last 50 years that they have won the award! Well deserved.

Also great to see Strictly win the best talent show. Dermot Oleary looked pretty smug and even got to mention a few “when I was doing the X Factor” comments in there. He was definitely hoping that X Factor didn’t win with Olly & Caroline at the helm! Haha

Eastenders best soap! Boooooooo

Special recognition for Billy Connolly was a great touch too. What a comedian. So funny. Grew up watching some of his stuff. Just wish I had seen more of him.

Gogglebox wins for Factual Entertainment, which is another cracking shout too.

All in all, a decent set of results for the night!

2016.1.19 – Sky TV…is f**king sh*t!

Yep, Leeds United fans are once again chanting that as Sky TV and the Football League collaborate to move another fixture for TV.

This time, Middlesbrough on Saturday 13th Feb has been moved to Monday 15th. Initially I didn’t think of it as too much of a problem but then jump onto Twitter and it’s clear that it’s causing all kinds of issues for fans. You have people who can’t make Midweek games, for example the guys who sit in front of me at Elland Road make a 400 mile round trip to watch the games…how are they meant to attend on a Monday night now? It’s going to mean flexing time at work and finding a way.

Then we hear the plight of our Norwegian fan base. Around 40 or so of them were planning on coming over for the game. Fly in, watch the game, weekend in Leeds then back to Norway on the Sunday evening…but now that’s just not possible…but their flights are booked and their tickets paid for.

Are Sky TV and/or the Football League going to refund those fans who now can’t make it the cost of their tickets? Nope.

So once again, the night of Sky TV causes problems. I expect Cellino will wade into the process sometime soon.

This week I’ve cancelled my Sky Sports on my Sky package. I literally watch WWE Raw, and any Leeds United games that are on there and now, I can do both by other means…so I ain’t justifying £17 a month to Sky for not much else on their Sports channels. I don’t watch “other” football so it makes sense.

2016.1.18 – You can keep your hat on

Had to laugh today. Althea was kicking off. She wouldn’t calm down…then all of a sudden she grabbed a hat and wow…silence…so for twenty minutes she sat watching TV whilst wearing this hat…little nutter

In other news, it was announced there were a lot of redundancies happening at work today. Luckily I dodged a bullet but plenty didn’t. Hopefully all those affected find a new job real soon.

2016.1.17 – Making A Murderer

Oops types this last night and forgot to hit Post!
***Warning – This post will contain spoilers to what happens on Making A Murderer. Don’t read if easily spilt! ***

Over the last few weeks, I’d heard a load of people watching a documentary on Netflix…a documentary! People were posting on Social Media about how amazing it was and everything…I had to check it out.

The opening episode opens with Steven Avery being released from prison in 2003 after serving 18 years for something. He keeps saying he knew all along he was innocent.

Then we flash back to 1985 when everything happened. An apparent rape and the arrest of Steven Avery. During the first episode we see how the state constantly blamed Avery, despite there being another suspect who had a history of these types of crimes. But the Manitowoc sheriff department want rid of Avery so they push everything towards him. They manipulate the case, and indeed the victim to make sure Avery gets fingered for it. From “artists impressions” to ignored alibis, Avery takes the rap and gets sentenced.

18 years later, DNA free him.

Over the next two years Avery fights against the system for compensation for wrongful imprisonment.

Oh and then a girl is murderered…and guess who the police go after for it…!

What follows is a mass of manipulations, evidence planting, and just sheer dickheadedness from the cops.

I won’t reveal what happens in the cases…but Wow!

This is one of the most thrilling documentary series I have ever seen. Emotions whilst watching run from hope to despair, joy to heartbreak, horror to disbelief.

Just perfection in a documentary. If you haven’t seen yet and this whets your appetite then get it watched!

So my Mum turned 60 the other week but they were in Benidorm on holiday so we celebrated it today.

All the family went to Sambuca’s in Morley. It was a lovely meal and a great night.
