Woke up this morning to some intriguing news about Lees United and the report that apparently Red Bull are set to invest in Leeds United, with a possible Stadium re-name to take place.

Cue massive controversy!

Red Bull have money to throw at plenty of projects. They own a MLS team in the New York Red Bulls, Austrian FC Red Bull Saltzberg and a formula one team. Hell, they even sponsored a guy to jump from space back to earth!

Chaleo Yoovidhya and Dietrich Mateschitz are shrewd businessmen, taking a drink and making it a global phenomenon. They are each worth $4 billion.

The financial backing is certainly there…but is the fan backing?

There seems to be a lot of views either way. Some are in the “you can’t change Elland Road’s name” way of thinking, and some are fearing they will take over our team completely, and some are even moaning that the word “red” shouldn’t be used due to the connotations with our friendly Lancastrian neighbours. But my belief is that this would be a very good move.

I ain’t sure who actually owns Elland Road, but if a cash influx from the drinks giant means we can buy it back, then I would more than welcome it. To the fans, LS11 0ES will always be Elland Road, whether it’s got another fancy name or not, and if we can get some serious cash in the bank, as fans, we would be stupid to knock it.

Welcome to Elland Road Red Bull!

Oooh, Jaegerbombs at half-time!

  1. Thomas Pitts says:

Red Bull own TWO Formula One teams… Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso. They also own a company called Red Bull Technology which designs the cars as well as an America’s Cup yacht. They have a NASCAR Team confusingly also called Red Bull Racing, an Australian V8 Supercar team, sponsor 6 drivers with various hopes of placing them in F1 in the future.

Red Bull Ghana are a football team in Division One, Red Bull Brasil play in Campeonato Paulista Série A2, The New York Red Bulls are in the MLS in America, RB Leipzig was the fifth division side SSV Markranstädt (their intention is to advance the re-modelled club to the top-flight Bundesliga within ten years), FC Red Bull Salzburg is an Austrian football club (known as FC Salzburg with a modified crest in UEFA competitions. However, they changed its colours from its traditional violet and white to red and white – resulting in some of the team’s fans forming a new club, SV Austria Salzburg. Two ice hockey teams and a basketball team complete the list.

Frankly, Leeds would be stupid to reject any offer. They’ve made a success of every sport they’ve been involved in after all – or are trying to. They could become the envy of many other clubs and the money will just end up elsewhere if they didn’t get involved.
