Page 331/365 : No TV appearance

Well today was the day I thought we would be appearing on Show Me The Telly on ITV. It was our celebrities and everything but alas, it was one of the other teams who played after us ok that same day.

So we’ll be on sometime soon…watch this space (although watching ITV at 4pm on weekdays would be more productive!)

Car Insurance came through. £3 a month increase. I can cope with that.

Elle had her day off work today and want shopping. She bought a couple of cool little Christmassy items for my desk at work. A little mini tree and a little USB flashing snowman.

It was the red one of these two :

I’ve called him “Flashty The Snowman”. Although my only gripe is that he’s wearing red….boooooo!

Should be on TV tomorrow…tune in at 4pm! ITV!

Page 329/365 : Shift change

Elle’s work shifts changed this week so it was a 10:30 start and a 8pm finish. It meant I had to fend for myself when I got home…but as she’s cooked a chilli this morning in preparation, it was all good. She’s good to me!

Picked up a DAB digital radio. My old one broken when we decorated the living room. The new one is lovely! I’ll be getting some usage out of that. And it’ll be good to be able to listen to the Leeda games again!

Show Me The Telly started on ITV this week…hopefully our episode will be on Wednesday. We already know that it’s the same celebrities!

Page 328/365 : Super Uncle

Up early this morning as we were taking my niece Megan to Sheffield Arena to see Disney On Ice. We picked her up early and she looked super cute in her Princess dress.

We picked up the coach from First Direct and headed over. We bought the obligatory flashing light thing before heading in.

When inside she met Rapunzel and also tucked into some mouse-flavoured popcorn 😉

The show was the “Dare To Dream” show, filled with Disney princesses. There was Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella and Rapunzel from Tangled.

I am a 32 year old and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Megan was loving it the whole way through. She particularly liked Maximilian, the horse from Tangled.

When it was all over we came home. I dropped Megan back home and went to the cinema. It was a case of turn up and watch whatever was on next…and it was The Family, the new Luc Besson film starring Robert DeNiro. It was massively shit. It tried so very much in lots of different ways to try to be something better but it just didn’t work at all, which was a shame because it could have been brilliant. It missed the mark by a VERY long way!

Then I went to Elle’s sister’s to pick her up. I had a bit of a bonding session with Seren, Amy & Tom’s little ‘un. She loves her Uncle David. It was the “What Did The Fox Say?” song that did it.

Eventually, I wore her out…hopefully she’ll give her Mum and Dad a good night’s sleep now! Haha.

It’s been a good fun day (apart from the crappy film!)…but it was topped off by this tweet from the Harchester United Twitter page :

Yup, Sky One’s Dream Team has been given a re-run online. I will definitely be reliving this! Can’t wait!!!

Page 327/365 : Doctor Who 50th Anniversary

This was it, after fifty years and eleven incarnations (that we knew about) it was time for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special.

I went to Cineworld to watch it in a packed cinema in full 3D glory.

Ever since the last episode of the last series, everyone has been wondering who the new Doctor was and why there’s be this John Hurt character appear. Well everything was answered in The Day Of The Doctor.

Warning…the following contains major spoilers…so if you ain’t seen it yet, don’t read on.

John Hurt was “The War Doctor”. Paul McGann’s 8th Doctor regenerated into him after drinking a potion which turned him into a warrior. When we caught up with him in the special, he was bang in the middle of the Time Wars, fighting off a Dalek invasion of Gallifrey. But as all felt lost and without hope, he was set to make the ultimate sacrifice. He was about to blow the whole planet to smithereens, taking everyone with him until the interface of the device being used took the form of Rose Tyler and went about showing him the error of his ways. This led to a meeting of John Hurt’s 9th Doctor, David Tennant’s 10th (but now technically 11th) Doctor, and Matt Smith’s 11th, now 12th incarnation.

It was up to them to stop John Hurt doing the dastardly act, whilst also dealing with some Zygons who were causing carnage with Queen Elizabeth in London. And this is where I found a pitfall in the anniversary episode. For me the whole show should have been about the Time Wars and the relationship between the War Doctor and two of his future selves. But too much of the episode was taken up with the Zygons storyline, taking away what could have been even more amazing.

Having discussed with others who watched, the feeling also seems to be the same. For me, there needed to be more animosity from Tennant/Smith towards Hurt, all aimed at the carnage he had caused and the hurt and distress the subsequent Doctors had felt. The newer Docs just seemed to give in to Hurt’s Doc a little too easily and they all became the best of friends.

The first half of the episode clunked around in the Zygon storyline way too much, when most of the intrigue and real spectacular stuff needed to happen within the Three Doctors’ storyline.

We did end up back at that though, and when all three were about to make the decision to blow Gallifrey up together, only to be stopped by Clara, who have the Doctor and idea, everything went fan-boy crazy.

First up was the three doctors speaking on screens in the war room announcing that they needed to fly their Tardis’ around Gallifrey to cause it to disappear. That they did…but they needed the help of ALL the Doctors. Cue shots of all the old guys in their respective Tardis making the necessary moves. William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston were all helping…and then Peter Capaldi turned up to support. All thirteen Doctors making Gallifrey disappear!

Then we had a lovely scene were the three main ones all moved on. Hurt left, beginning his regeneration into Christopher Eccleston, followed by Tennant (saying “I Don’t Want To Go!”) and leaving Smith with the curator of a gallery, played by Tom Baker who had a very touching moment with Matt Smith.

The final verdict was that it was amazing…but it could have been better if there had been more focus on the Time War and the struggle between all three Doctors instead of playing on laughs instead.

I still loved it though.

Page 325/365 : The Hunger Games : Catching Fire

Watched film #1,239 from icheckmovies.com

20131121-235003.jpg

Tonight we went to the cinema to see the new Hunger Games film, Catching Fire. As everyone knows, this is an adaptation from the book trilogy and is the second part of the three.

The Hunger Games are over. Following Katniss & Peeta’s defiance against the Capitol, they are whisked away on the Victor’s Tour where they unwillingly start an uprising amongst the people. In order for President Snow to put an end to it all, he orders all previous Victors to be submitted for the next games, the Quarter Quell…and once again, out heroes are thrust back into an arena to battle to the death.

The film remains very faithful to the source material, which I like to see. I read the books back to back following the release of the trailer for the first film and loved them so it’s good to see that a brilliant story is being taken seriously.

One of my issues with the first film was the shocking special effects, but as the budget on Catching Fire is clearly a lot higher and as such this is not an issue. I don’t want to give too much away but let’s just say that some of the Arena moments benefit from much greater CG.

An absolutely fantastic film telling a great story from a brilliant book. I wish it had a little more of the violence from the book but they have to keep it to the 12A certification.

Jennifer Lawrence is once again fantastic (and beautiful) and needed to be on the back of her recent Oscar win. Woody Harrelson just acts as himself when playing Haymitch, Elizabeth Bank is brilliant as Effie, but my new favourite Hunger Games actress is Jena Malone as Johanna Mason…😘

A couple of great castings too with Philip Seymour-Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee the games maker, and Sam Claflin as the cool and confident Finnick Odair.

Go see…but make sure you’ve seen the first film first!

And may the odds be ever in your favour!

Page 323/365 : Vegas Police

Had a laugh watching Vegas Police which we had recorded and series linked.

This guy turned up with his Tshirt off, flashing his belly at everyone and being quite aggressive. He put his Tshirt back on…Wrestlemania 27 Tshirt! Dickhead!

Watched more Supernatural. Had been watching an episode at lunch…then the iPad battery died. Schoolboy error!

It was the eating task on I’m A Celeb…brilliant as ever. Matthew Wright and Joey Essex went head to head and ate everything, although there were a few close calls.

Watched some more Supernatural. I am now watching it on my own as Elle won’t watch. Sticking some of the episodes onto the iPad too so I can watch at lunch at work.
