Page 301/365 : Meeting Robin Hobb

Headed over to Manchester this evening to meet Robin Hobb, the author of undoubtably my favourite series of books I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

Everything began a couple of years ago when my friend Yvonne told me about a series of books called The Farseer Trilogy. All she told me was that she’d been recommended them and had loved them and that I would love then too. So I bought the first book, Assassin’s Apprentice, and was thrust into the world of Fitzchivalry Farseer and The Fool…a love was born. A set of characters that reached out and could be adored by all, accompanied by some evil characters too who looked to thwart Fitz’s rise. The books are amazing. Fitz is a royal bastard who possesses an ancient magic called The Wit which allows him to communicate with animals through an ancestral bond. The Wit is much revered and Fitz has to try to keep it to himself, whilst also juggling the responsibility of being taken in and trained up to be an assassin for his his grandfather, the King.

Through the Farseer Trilogy, and moving south to the Liveship Traders Trilogy, before returning to Fitz & The Fool with The Tawny Man trilogy and finally back to the Rain Wild Chronicles, the world which Robin has built is breathtaking and wondrous.

And tonight, we met her.

It was a talk at Waterstones in Manchester. She had done a signing earlier in Leeds, but we were at work so had to travel over to Manchester to see her tonight. She read the first part of “The Wilful Princess & The Piebald Prince” before taking questions. I asked a few because there were things I liked to know. I asked whether she knew where the books were going to go when she started out, I also asked whether there were any characters she didn’t necessarily like and wanted to kill off but couldn’t because they were fan favourites. I also asked whether the names of characters outside the Farseer books had come naturally or whether they meant anything.

It was a thoroughly entertaining talk and chat and something I am extremely glad I was able to attend and I would like to thank Robin for taking the time to do such a thing. I know a lot of it is publicity for the new book, but I also think that being able to meet with someone who has given you so much joy through words is a fantastic thing to be able to be part of.

Robin was lovely and sincere and it was lovely to hear her thoughts on her own writing process and her history which had shaped the way she writes today.

So…I urge you all to go out and read these books! You won’t be disappointed.

This book is a prequel to all the previous series and gives more insight into the ancient wit magic.

Page 300/365 : Cooking in the kitchen with David!

Elle was working today or the sports n social team at a Halloween party so I chilled at home. Watched a Columbo before playing some Xbox and GTAV.

Went for the ingredients and decided to cook Ginger Orange Chicken for tea :

Was lush.

Watched X Factor before watching Homeland…dear lord…watching Homeland is much like pulling teeth nowadays. It was a series which started off full of promise and had tonnes of twists and turns, keeping you gripped to everything that happened at all times, but everything has just gone massively stale and lacklustre.

I will stick with it but I am not necessarily counting down the days until the next episode is on, like I used to be.

Film Review : Escape Plan

Watched film # 1232 from icheckmovies.com

Stallone and Schwarzenegger. An 80’s action film dream team. Together at last as a duo on the big screen.

The story is simple. Stallone tests prison breakout capabilities. He ends up in a prison with no escape. He meets Arnie. They need to escape.

This film is a huge nod to buddy movies and 80’s action in a hugely successful way. It never truly takes itself seriously and always maintains it’s tongue in cheek approach which works so well.

Chuck in Jim Caviezel and Vinnie Jones as the bad guy brains and brawn behind the operation and you have a winning formula that is driven home by two of Hollywood’a big hitters.

It’s not gonna win any oscars, but it’s pure escapism! Enjoy it.

Film Review : Ender’s Game

Watched film #1,231 from icheckmovies.com

Ender’s Game is latest big budget sequel packed series of films to be booted from a series of books. Following in the huge footsteps of Twilight, Harry Potter and the Hunger Games films, Ender’s game focuses around Ender, a youngster taken on by a huge space military corporation because he possesses the necessary skills to go far.

He’s initially downtrodden as the youngest on the programme but soon begins to come into his own through various training exercises and practice operations.

The film is huge budget, with masses of spectacular special effects. All the actors in it all come across well too, from the child actors right through to Harrison Ford.

But when the film starts, you kinda get the impression that you’ve missed a whole load of the action and you’re missing out on it throughout the film. The whole movie also feels like a setup for the sequels, and having not read the books, that may be the case…

But the film is great and genuinely intriguing. I will definitely be watching the sequels!

Page 298/365 : Good Karma?

Back on Tuesday, I had been paid 45p a mile for driving to Manchester and back for the Gameshow we filmed. It meant I was overpaid over what the petrol cost.

As I knew I would be driving back again on the Wednesday, I filled up Tuesday night. I needed to pay £35 but as I was paying with 2 x £20 notes, I asked for a £5 scratchcard…and win £40.

I told Elle she could have it to treat herself.

So I cashed it in tonight. When I did, I bought another scratchcard and won another £20.

Good karma for treating my wife? I’d like to think so.

Oops. This didn’t post yesterday :

Back to work properly today. No hanging around and hob-nobbing with TV personalities, chilling in TV studios and quizzing.

I miss it already.

Interestingly, one of the celebs stuck a picture of me on Twitter. I guess I can talk about that as she put it out there…

What will tomorrow bring? A possible Gameshow appearance, but we are only standby so if not tomorrow it will be definitely Wednesday.

Cramming, learning lists, orders of things and dates…

My shirts and t-shirts are ironed…anything could go down…watch this space!
